Great episode

Warning: Spoilers
Although I have my problems with Kevin getting someone pregnant after a one night stand and then proposing to her, which isn't his character at all I don't see how they can redeem him after his comments to Randall. But, I digress. I just cannot believe there are so many of you STILL saying blm and COVID are political issues. Where have you been for 8 months? How are you still yelling that these are political issues? I just don't get it. They never discussed politicians, they never mentioned the election, to those of you who are ignorant to the ideas of race and class and justice you haven't been watching the same this is us. Jack and Rebecca's father? The disrespect that he was a veteran, the elitism that he showed jack telling him to stay away? Jacks dad with abuse, substance use and Jacks brother, a veteran with mental health issues, the stories about little Randall and the race issues at the pool and school etc. I guess you're ok with that but COVID and police brutality are off the table? Huh? Just makes you look ignorant and that you're the problem blaming a tv show, as you usually do on being liberal when they literally NEVER mention politics you make it about you.

A Beautiful, Authentic Nuance
merlinsenthil28 October 2020
Many here are complaint about the alters to the script due to COVID and more. Such an approach should be commended and looked at with a more charitable view.

This Is Us gives us REAL CHARACTERS to follow in real time. So, it only makes sense that the events in this world would affect them, too. We want that. That's part of what the show was about.

I agree that these two episodes were, at times, a bit slow and lacking in some senses. However, the scripts still held some really powerful dialogue and strong scenes, especially nuanced with all the battles of racial things and COVID. I do not think this was "too political." If anything, this show fought to remain NOT policial.

This show is about people! Not politics. And it remains so. This showed Randall's personal life struggles and all he faces as a black man. That is not politics. That's people.

Even more, this script managed to be nuanced with a bit of religious/Christian undertone, which I think is beautiful. For a world that is very often anti-religion right now, the script shows how many people do turn, in some senses, to God or "deep, spiritual" things. In this, we can think: If there is a God, does he answer my prayers? Why does he allow so much evil? And, the show answers this even in it's not-religious philosophy. Many tragedies happen, but it is how life - or God - uses them to build our character and make us who we are... meant to be.

Disappointed by people rating this so low

Warning: Spoilers
Can't believe people are mad that they incorporated the BLM demonstrations. There are black characters at the very heart of this show, and they deserve to have their stories be reflective of the real life experiences and sorrows of black people. One of the crucial aspects of consuming fiction is to empathise and connect to characters whose experiences are similar to yours, and also to characters whose experiences are not.

On the other hand, I understand wanting to escape Covid in your tv shows right now. I'm okay with it here personally, because it doesn't feel overly intrusive to me, but I also get that it's a lot to experience it everywhere all the time in reality and then in your tv shows as well.

A timely return
espires-3895328 October 2020
I've seen some people reviewing this episode with 1 star, complaining about how the episode was too political. Was it political? Yes. Has This Is Us always had political undertones? Yes! It would appear people forgot the show spent an entire season criticizing the Vietnam War. This Is Us has always been a show about people, real people, making their way in the world - a very close reflection of our world. I'm not surprised that they chose to cover COVID-19 and Black Lives Matter, and I am very glad they did.

Yes a little slow, but very logical to be about the times

Warning: Spoilers
To all those that feel this should not be about what is really life, COME ON!. Some shows just need to show what is real life right now. You don't expect to see the Chicago shows (Fire, MED and PD) NOT deal with the reality of Covid and the the murder of George Floyd. My escape from this true life story is by watching Star Trek, Discovery, Picard, The Orville and Supernatural and other shows that can logically portray their story without Covid and real life.

Everybody should watch This Is Us
abdallamesl29 October 2020
Funny how some people are giving this episode a 1/10 claiming that this is us is being political! Really? since season 1 this is us is that type of show that focuses on such issues! so what is it now? or it's just hate? like it or not, this is us is easily one of the greatest shows ever, and this deserves a 10/10.

This Is Us has always tackled real problems in a real world so it only makes sense that they incorporate what we all are going through as part of their lives. If you want fantasy TV, watch the Bachelorette.

Okay.

Warning: Spoilers
The episode was just okay. It felt like it dragged on sometimes, some stuff that needed to be addressed was, but overall it felt a little rough, like they had to rewrite (they most likely did). It's my least favourite season premiere but the episode was okay overall.

Kinda wish they hadn't ended it the way they did, someone coming back from the dead, again (remember when Nicky was supposed to be dead?), is dangerously toeing the line into Soap Opera territory.

This IS NOT POLITICAL!
zachbug30 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Wow, it's really revealing when you read these comments and see people outing themselves as racist while still claiming racism doesn't exist. Guys, hate to break it to you but Randall has always been black! It's not a new theme of this show. Also the fact that everyone is saying that this show was their "escape". Where are you getting that idea?!? This is a heavy hitting show with a ton of very heavy themes. I didn't see everyone complaining when Alzheimer's became a theme. Or is that just because everyone knows Alzheimer's is real but half of our popular still thinks racism doesn't exist?!?! Everyone needs to wake up and realize that the writers are trying to tell a story with their writing and not just appease what you think should be on TV. If you don't like it stop watching. Or if I need to be clearer, if you're racist stop watching! They're telling a story that should be told!

My favorite show is ruined.
ebayman-6939729 October 2020
What a let-down. TIU was my respite; not any more. I'm *so* disappointed with how racial unrest resulted in a segregated final scene - black Pearsons and white Pearsons separated and, according to Randall, not in need of each other. These people are family. How is it that at such a tumultuous time, rather than embrace each other, they are divided? It doesn't feel natural. That's not how a family would act. And if racial barriers can't be overcome in a multiracial family, what hope does society have of solving them?

What a bleak, depressing and (I hope) incorrect picture of humanity this episode painted. I watch TIU to restore my faith in humanity and see flawed people do their best to love each other. I don't want the Pearsons reduced to a microcosm of dysfunctional society. They should continue to be an example for society to follow. I know they've never been portrayed as perfect, but they're better than this.

Ignore all negative reviews!
WhatsOccurring4 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
First of all, congratulations to everyone involved for continuing to produce this amazing show during the pandemic and how they have written it into the storyline. With regards to the negative 'too political' reviews, just ignore them! The whole show is about how these good people overcome the difficult situations that happen throughout their lives. We have seen how certain racial issues have impacted Randall (who is now a politician by the way!) and his beautiful family. So including such a poignant real life event, one that shook the world, is bold and a stroke of genius. This show inspires me to be a better human being.

Warning: Spoilers
As much as i love this show and i had high expectations about this premiere yet it didn't disappoint that much. BLM and Covid-19 should be mentioned as much as i hate hearing about it. one more thing am so done with is talking about Randel. i think they gave him enough attention for the past 3 seasons and time to put the focus more on Kate now. i hope this season wont be all about randel as well cuz its getting too much.

The Pandemic: It Happened. George Floyd: It Happened.
tonyhf13 March 2024
This episode wasn't the most exciting, but it was hardly an episode lower than a solid 7.

I gave the episode a 10 to make up for the absurdly uneducated low star reviews.

You may not like the fact that the Pandemic happened, but it did. It wasn't just in the U. S. it is a worldwide health issue that killed many lives. Liberals had nothing to do with it and you-know-who is the one who rushed out the vaccine so try shifting your imaginary blame on the ones who actually were there when it started.

You may also not like the fact that George Floyd was murdered and the man who did it was tried and is now serving time as his punishment. You can wish it away all you want, but it happened.

This episode chose to focus on real events that were happening in real time and made absolute sense in the shows context. You may not like it or agree with it, but guess what? It happened.

Outstanding
Hitchcoc11 May 2024
I have a suggestion. If all you want is a show without any substance, there are stations running old Gilligan's Island episodes. This show has been on the cutting edge of human interaction from the very start and continues. Randall and his family are BLACK. Do you really think that their lives are not affected by that fact? We have seen the poverty and despair of many of those characters, but mention what went on in Minneapolis and they're ruining "your" show. What Kevin said to Randall was way beyond what was appropriate, even in a rivalry. While I thought Randall's actions regarding his mother were not to her benefit, he was portraying an honest and believable character. As for religion and begging for God to intervene: That's fine but maybe if people started walking the walk when it comes to their "beliefs" we might have a better world.

Wrong direction...no thank you!
xboxdadhtc29 October 2020
I've heard enough about COVID this year that I most definitely don't need it being incorporated into a television show that I watch to escape the stresses of real life.

Such a pity because I never gave the show a chance, then one day I did and really enjoyed the acting, writing, etc.

Watching a show about COVID while living through it is worse than watching a war movie while being deployed to a war zone.

Overbearing with the whole Vivid deal!
tamarahroberto-9902228 October 2020
So I LOVE this show but the Covid thing got old after about the first 2 minutes of the show. I get having the show be current with the times regardless of your own personal view but the was waaaay over the top, whatever happened to being able to immerse within a show to escape for a bit. Hope this isn't going to be a season trend because I will have to bow out of a much loved show of mine.

Stop the politics.
chadcrapser29 October 2020
Stop.. just stop with the politics. Between covid, Racial Injustice, and an election year... politics make me sick. I couldn't even enjoy this episode due to the direction of the first episode. Hopefully the producers and writers change the direction

krystalpickering29 October 2020
I loved this show from the very beginning... i watched the new episode and turned it off with 15 mins of it... i loved the show as i said and yes before it had political moments but this was like watching the news!! I hear about covid and politics every single day when i get on facebook or watch the news. I want to watch my show and disconnect from the messy world we live in right now. Very sad and disappointed!! I will not be watching anymore unless they go back to their storylines and not about the real world.

bkbernies31 October 2020
2020 has been bad enough and now one of my favorite shows just made it worse. There was NO NEED to go to the PC suck up side, but you did. For several seasons I LOVED Randall, but now he's become a whining, woe is me, martyr. I don't think I can watch anymore, and that is truly unfortunate.
