Quite good
audrulyte14 March 2008
Quite good, though not as good as I've expected after hearing so much of praising. This particular movie was indeed very wide advertised here in Lithuania even before it was finished as it is more or less, hard to say as haven't read that particular book, based on Jurga Ivanauskaite's book "Ragana ir lietus", so I was pretty eager to go and watch it. Well, all the critics, or, OK, most of them, just had cried 'Oh, how good it was going to be and how good it is. What a masterpiece of Puipa'. Well, partly I can or even must agree. This is really a nice movie and, if compared to some other 'great' Lithuanian movies, it's even almost excellent. What I mean by this? Oh, it's just that during the past decade almost all Lithuanian movies were totally unwatchable as a regular person hardly could understand what stuff he or she's been watching. So this movie IS already very very good due to the fact that one can pretty easy understand what is going on on screen and there is no need to read some critics before or after watching the movie in order to get hold of some point of it. I am really delighted that this movie is good enough to recommend to watch it. Though do not expect anything light or easy, as this is not of an amusement movie's kind. 7 out of 10

Strangely entertaining...

Warning: Spoilers
Even as a non-Lithuanian, I found this movie accessible. It may pay to know of the old Lithuanian saying though,

"Jeigu jūs einate į apleistas pastatas, saugokitės blogų kino kūrėjus"

or

"If you go into a deserted building, be wary of gangs of sex-crazed men"

I guess it's something of folklore or a figure of speech, but it does make those scenes make a little bit more sense if you understand this.

This movie breaks with certain conventions about script-writing: don't expect any great catharsis at the end, for instance. Despite some moments of extreme over-acting (again, perhaps a cultural thing? Let's give it the benefit of the doubt), strangely entertaining... not just due to the very raunchy sex scenes littered throughout.

Are you psycho-something enough for this?

First of all, if you are from Lithuania or at least a Lithuanian deport, its a must-see movie. Why? Well, for a number of reasons.

To begin with, have you ever seen director's Algimantas Puipa best movie made so far "Forest of The Gods"? I guess you did not. But if you did.. Actually, this movie is better drama with better script, better actors and the director had improved too!! Secondly, this is not only a movie, its based on three of R.I.P. Jurga Ivanauskaite books. Its not an adaptation or a remake of some old movies. "Whisper of Sin" is representing passion of new era movies - its based on a book. Another plus for this movie is that camera-man really did his job and movie looks amazing!! Not amazing compared to those Hollywood expensive crap, but its the most we could expect from a Lithuanian movie. Lastly, i found no contra-arguments for this movie, so i can just say that even if you are not Lithuanian or you don't understand our language, download this movie from internet someday, or buy DVD when it hits stores later this year.

All in All, even this movie will probably wont get an Oscar, because 300 will :), still, it's and awesome Lithuanian flick.

This movie has something...
raimio26 July 2007
I really wanted to see it, and waited for this movie with impatience.

There was a rumors around me, that A. Puipa, R. Samuolyte, K. Smoriginas and other people of this filmed story, are just brilliant! They have done theirs job just perfect...

And then, the "biggest moment", I saw this chef-d'oeuvre! Actually, I can't say, that "Whisper of Sin" is great, but... it has something that is catching you.

J. Ivanauskaite has opened the most darkest sides of humanity, which are demon-strated in this movie. You can feel ugly, when you see some scenes, you can feel good, when you see another scenes... but you always know- it's possible... it can bee in real life... and that makes you a big impression!

Screenplay is "strong" and bold, acting is terrific, background of this movie- Vilnius, is great too... and I'm "afraid" it's one of the best movie, ever made in Lithuania!

Rasa Samuolyte is brilliant
Indre-St-14 March 2007
first of all I admit, I never liked lithuanian movies. when I saw Algimantas Puipa movie "Forest of gods", I was so disappointed. today I went to the cinema, to see this movie called "whisper of sin", just because my family wanted me to see it, and change my opinion on lithuanian movies. guess what. my opinion totally changed. the biggest surprise was the acting - it wasn't boring and ridiculous.I think Rasa Samuolyte - is the best actress in this movie.only thing i didn't like was the misery , pessimism, darkness in this movie. but anyway, I'm surprised that I liked the movie, and that this lithuanian movie is actually very good.

one of the best Lithuanian movies ever
tavaste8 October 2010
I am not very big fan of Lithuanian cinema, but this film was really interesting to watch. Why? Because it was something different. The concept was quite brave for Lithuanian audience. Some of the scenes were even more open than in French movies. All this film is the mix of sins: forbidden lust, suicide, lie, infidelity, madness, compulsion, violence. Actually lust seems to be the biggest sin that causes all the problems of the film characters. The characters are not casual persons: artists, priest, psychiatrist, necrologist. All of them are trying to live through their own dramas. But "fixing" their lives they just make everything more complicated. Screening is based on the book of one of the most famous Lithuanian writers.

Algimantas Puipa does it again!
Once again Algimantas Puipas spoiled great Lithuanian literature. After "Dievu Miskas" (Forest of Gods) in 2005 this time it's "Nuodemes uzkalbejimas" (Whisper of the Sin). This director has incredible ability of taking wonderful books and making them the most boring piece of cinema. He's torturing you with every line, every scene and every second of the movie. This is mostly because of the fact that the director tries to make each and every scene the most important in the whole movie, and therefore you get... Well, if you've seen this movie, you'll find a curse word that fits in here. There's one more thing that Lithuanian movies have in common. I honestly don't know why, but it appears that we've got the most UNEROTIC movies, and "Nuodemes uzkalbejimas" is no difference. At the scene where the psychotherapist gets down with the guy from morgue (How unsexy is that?!) you can go completely catatonic, because it's simply ugly. The movie is slightly erotic, but in Lithuania it's called controversial because of the sex scenes. You've got to be kidding me. If you're still wondering if you should see this movie, I have to mention the last fact. It was based on novels of a GREAT writer J. Ivanauskaitė, who passed away few days before the movie was finished, may God rest her soul. And one of her last public phrases was "I'm tired of fighting cancer and Algimantas Puipa". That says a lot.

R.I.P. Jurga Ivanauskaitė.

Stop spoiling our classics, Algimantas Puipa.

great film
vilniete_200127 February 2010
Sorry, I am not among those Lithuanians who condemn everything that local writers, artists, producers, filmmakers, etc. produce. I liked that film very much, the actors were great. Some of the actors were offered the personages the kind of what they never used to be before. And this was the great experience and challenge. Of course, Jurga Ivanauskaite is a great talent. Films, books and other pieces of art are made not for the narrow circle of critics, they are made for people. Everyone is entitled to have his/her own opinion, so mine is "great film". I'd like other Ivanauskaite's novels to be made into films.
