A Journey Through Mexican-American Culture
slapped_silly28 September 2006
I saw this little movie in L.A. at some film festival (the director actually won an award that night) and I have to say, I was taken back by the different approach at filming the border.

Half docudrama, half melodrama, it's a story about the U.S./Mexican border and a discovery of what kinds of stories can emerge from it. There's also some action and gunfights, as well as a strong portrayal of some of the bigotry that you can see daily in California.

If I had to relate it to some other movie, I would probably say, "Think Tommy Lee Jones' Three Burials" but it's not exactly that either.

Splendid!

For this independent film, it's important to mention that the actors and actresses are students from various California colleges. Their acting is simply superb! Also, Pedro Sandoval did a wonderful job filming and editing. Pancho Zamora helped with sound and Amilcar Chavez with production support. Art von Son won the "Best International Director Award" at the NY International Independent Film Festival. Overall, this low budget independent film is artistic, thoughtful and passionate, and it is very significant at these times when we have such troubled border region circumstances. Ofrenda Desnuda is a video drama that humanizes migrants and that embodies the experiences of a Mexican immigrant in the Tijuana / San Diego border. We see in this film a constant fluctuation between elation and despair. The plot has everything, from adventure to passion to humor, and love.
