'Special Assignment' kicks off on a pretty serious note, with Captain Scarlet blowing his Spectrum career on a gambling spree. It's not long before he finds himself being bounced out of ritzy jazz clubs and languishing in a hotel.
Turns out it was an undercover operation (hastily organized and implemented) with Scarlet ferreting out a Mysteron attack on Nuclear City. The jig is up and Spectrum swoops in, the bad guys are dealt with and everyone has a laugh in the end. It all works out, but there's still some awkwardness due to the secretive nature of the project. Colonel White's sort of a dick when Green and Blue go maverick ("Idiots! You nearly jeopardized the whole operation!") and it's kind of a funny scene. But the opening with Scarlet's reckless wagering is enough of a stumper. I like this one, mostly because of the moody sets and subversive action. It changes up the show's formula pretty well.
7/10
