With his daughter, Jamilah, Ronald remembers literally growing up in a library, creeping down to the stacks in the middle of the night when curiosity gripped him. Once a year on Mother's Day, a charity bus service takes children to visit their mothers in prison across California. Nearly one in ten of the state's children have a parent in prison. Many are unable to regularly visit their incarcerated parents because remote, rural prisons are often difficult to access for low-income families. Through this bus journey, Mother's Day explores the impact of mass incarceration on an entire generation of youth.

Ellaraino experienced a common teenage reaction when she learned she'd have to leave Los Angeles to spend the summer in Louisiana with her great-grandmother, Silvia. Less common was Ellaraino's realization that Silvia had lived through the Civil War, and had a lot to teach her great-granddaughter about the true meaning of freedom.
