Senseless

Warning: Spoilers
I saw this short movie before one hour in the Free TV Premiere. And this was the crappiest short movie I have ever seen.

Anyway, don't get me wrong: I like short films and some kind of art films. But this movie was only stupid. The content is following: A man is staying in a strange room. He is - only god knows why - dressed with a karate-outfit like Bruce Lee. Than every minute is coming a naked woman into this room. The man kill all the women with a shovel. Before the women died, they asked him to use his toilet. Anybody gets the sense of these? Or is there no content? I think the second. Don't waste your time with this crap. I want my 8 minutes back.

Art or pointless violence?

It's your decision to make in this almost 10-year-old 8-minute short film by Georgian writer and director Bidzina Kanchaveli. A couple women, one after the other, come to a guy's apartment and ask if they can use his toilet, because they lost their keys. Not only will he not let them do so, but he kills them all with his shovel. I was asking myself the question what the half woman would be and there is not really a solution at the end. Was it the goose? But he did not kill her. Or the egg? Anyway, I did not like this film's ending at all. Maybe there is some greater symbolism I am not seeing, but I don't care. The key cannot get inside the egg. That is biologically impossible. It was probably intended to give this film a higher meaning, but in my opinion, it did not work. Which is a shame as everything towards the ending was actually suspenseful and interesting. But then Kanchaveli messed things up. Not recommended.

A fascinating experiment ...

"7,5 Woman" is a surreal work, a kind of new myth in which a mysterious man is living in an endless floor, a very fascinating setting, imprisoned in his own world. A naked woman is suddenly there; she's searching for a key. On her quest she will be killed by the men. Then other women are coming and will be killed … until the man finally finds THE KEY of this world.

This movie deals with our existential fear, with a very acid humor. "7,5 Woman" allows us to feel the whole universe, without being completely lost.

"Short film", is a technical appellation to warn the audience that they are just going to see a "small" movie. A piece of art is a piece of art, no matter how long it is. "7,5 Woman" achieve more than a lots of other 90 minutes features film. Sometimes words are too small to describe a painting, a music piece or a movie...

I completely recommend to see and enjoy the experiment and the audacity from this artwork.

Sophisticated

Warning: Spoilers
This short tells you a self-contained and hermetic nightmare. As the naked women are looking for their keys you are also looking for a key to unlock and understand this bad dream. Therefore, this key is a symbol for the closeness of dreams. Kanchaveli don't try to make a movie with a problem-solving message. The question is not how far you are able to understand the message. The question is how far you are willing to accept the message that dreams are complying its own rules. Like a dream, this short has as many plots as it does viewers with their own individual interpretations and perspectives. It forces itself upon you with a vengeance, but simultaneously encourages the kind of disengagement you experience when you are conscious that you are dreaming. This is the magic of self-containing stories.

For sure, this is only a theory but I believe Kanchaveli is a really smart and sophisticated guy. 7½ Women is a little masterpiece. I love this movie.

Radical and unusual

I've seen this movie - and I thought that this is a really amazing film. Sure, it has an enigmatic story which only gives you short story bits - the rest is up to you. But since it is a surrealistic film which doesn't claim to show reality you very soon realize that you have to see the film behind the film, what you see is the surface, what you feel is on the soundtrack, what it is? It's in your mind! The film is very well executed, starting with the casting, the set design, the editing and - most of all - the music. It reminded me of films by Bunuel or the Dali-sequence in Hitchcocks "Spellbound". In any case a rare piece of a free-minded filmmaker who doesn't care too much about conventions. Not German at all, thank God, no explanations, no excuses... You can have my 8 minutes, I saw it twice!
