"Three Little Piglets" in particular steals my heart
TheLittleSongbird23 October 2016
As a fan of Winnie the Pooh, 'The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh' was always one of my favourite shows as a child. Not all childhood favourites have held up, but 'The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh' is one of the strongest examples of those that have.

While the original three 60s-70s short films ('Honey Tree', 'Blustery Day' and 'Tigger Too') and the 1977 'The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh' are just a little better, 'The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh' is one of the Winnie the Pooh franchise's high points. 'The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh' is, as said a few times already, a rare example of a show with not a bad episode for the whole four seasons it ran, and has something for kids and adults alike. "Eeyore's Tail Tale" is a great episode, but the episode that has always stolen my heart more is "Three Little Piglets".

The animation in both episodes is very bright, well drawn and colourful, everything looking lush, detailed and smooth. In addition to that, the music is playfully jaunty and beautifully orchestrated, enhancing sadder moments with poignant and particularly lush and emotional scoring, whimsical parts with an energy but also pathos and the more playful moments with a jaunty touch. The theme tune is very rousing and one of the catchiest theme songs of any animated show of the late 80s.

Writing has a perfect mix of whimsy, drollness, wit, charm and childhood innocence, shining in both episodes.

Both "Eeyore's Tail Tale" and "Three Little Piglets" tell their simple but charming and funny stories impeccably, and show a mastery of characterisation. "Eeyore's Tail Tale" tells a simple story entertainingly and with some nice surprises. Tigger shines in a way only Tigger can. Eeyore is so endearing once you look past his gloominess as you can tell in some episodes he cares about his friends, and Pooh is adorable with some of his intended sincere words of wisdom and all that coming across as real laugh out loud moments.

"Three Little Piglets", like "Monster Frankenpooh", is only about five minutes long, but still it is a genuinely funny and clever little twist on the famous story, while having elements, as Pooh loses track of the story, of Little Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The characters are on top form, Pooh narrates and does it in such a cute fashion, Piglet is more than ideal for the roles of the three piglets and Rabbit's(dressed mostly in what looks eerily like the Bad Bad Wolf from the Disney cartoon The Three Little Pigs and its sequels) cantankerous and often frustrated personality makes for a great foil with the sight of him in a Pooh suit being one of the funniest sight gags of the show.

Love all the characters, especially Tigger as well as their friendship, family-like bond and loyalty regardless of arguments and character flaws. The voice acting is uniformly excellent.

In conclusion, two great episodes of a consistent show, with "Three Little Piglets" especially good. 10/10 Bethany Cox
