***SPOILERS*** It's when ace crime reporter Chris "Ace" Bane, Barry Sullivan, saw his girlfriend Maggie Ames, Terrence O'Connor,smooching from afar with another man he just about lost it. Belting her right in the kisser "Ace" caused Mggie to fall backwards and end up breaking her neck killing herself. Now both trying to cover up his crime and at the same time get his hands on Maggie's lover "Ace" plans to frame him for his murder. In the meantime "Ace" later kills this beach bum Roger, Greg Mullavery, who caught him in the act an threatened to go to the police if he didn't play him off. The beach bum Roger only asked "Ace" for a measly payoff of $300.00 a week and all he got was a bullet in the gut for his troubles.
Well as things turned out to his both shock and surprise "Ace" later found out that Maggie's secret lover was non other then his son Greg, Geoffery Devel, who's now soon to be the #1 suspect in her murder! Now in a real fix "Ace plans at first fix the evidence in his killing of Maggie and at the same time prove that Greg was innocent of killing her. How can he expect to do that without implicating himself in Maggie's murder?

Finally realizing what a 1st class jerk he is "Ace" finally give himself up to face the music and not make a bigger jerk of himself then he already is.
