A group of 'simulants' infect Starbug with virus that forces the crew to use the Artificial Reality (AR) program to fight it.
This is an enjoyable episode with good sci-fi concepts and a very fun storyline that should appeal to fans of Star Trek, in particular where the Trek characters interact in a Western themed setting or do holosuite role-plays.
The opening sequences set the scene for the AR adventure and contain some very funny banter regarding Lister's use of the technology. There is also a great sight-gag when the crew first communicate with the simulants.
When the action moves to the Loredo Western town it's great fun to see Rimmer, Lister, Cat and Kryten playing their hilariously named Western characters in this setting. There are quite a few nods/references to classic Western movies like Rio Bravo, High Noon, Butch Cassidy and Leone's 'Dollars' trilogy. All performances are excellent, including Dennis Lil as the main antagonist.
This episode is notable for winning and international Emmy Award. It is a strong episode, but for me Red Dwarf has produced several on par with its quality and some that are even better.
