A tale of two accents...

Arthur had two accents - one for The Winchester etc where 'e would drop 'is "h"'s and a posher one at times in this episode where he was trying to get membership of an upmarket club.

Teerific cast

Sir Derek Jacobi, the legendary Kathleen Byron and Christopher Biggins (playing it straight) together with George Layton playing a cowboy mechanic. What a cast for an amusing tale back from the first season when Minder was not a self parody, and Gergo Cole spoke with a posh accent.

The birth of a legend.

This was the leaner, meaner version of Minder before it went all "Carry On Arthur" and Dennis Waterman got sidelined. In fact Terry McCann has got plenty to do in this episode, mainly playing detective as he pursues a timeshare conman who's swindled one of Arthur's friends out of her savings.

It was a real coup to get Derek Jacobi on board, and the brilliant acting and dialogue in his scenes with Dennis Waterman was the kind of top notch drama that the later series lacked. The Bounty Hunter also introduces probably my favourite supporting character Des the mechanic (George Layton); Des pulls more strokes than the boat race, and butter wouldn't melt in his mouth as he's pleading "Terry i swear i didn't know it was a ringer!" Also notice George Cole's posh accent in this one; The Bounty Hunter was the very first Minder episode to be made.

Posh Arthur

Obviously one of the very first ones to be filmed as the characters don't seem to be as developed judging by the feel of this episode.

Terry plays private detective to help a widow who has lost money to a timeshare racket.rather than a low level minder and George Coles Arthur has a very strange posh accent.

Terry's job seems to be as a hire out private detective rather than a minder and skilfully locates and retrieves the £6000 the widow women had lost to the scammer.

Some good stunt sequences and the first appearance of the likeable but extremely dodgy mechanic Des and we see a much smarter and cleverer Terry than we saw in later episodes.

He generally came across as a likeable simpleton however here he is so intelligent and skilled in his private eye mode it makes you wonder was this a discarded episode of 'The Sweeney ' as it has all the attributes of one.

All in all a very good episode and the acting is superb from a very strong cast and the writing is of a very high standard.

Also a very strange scene with Arthur being very decent to Terry over money , something that wasn't a feature in the series as it progressed.

One of the best but feels so different to the rest.

1st Episode Filmed

Watching this today, I only found out after that it was the first ever Minder actually filmed. The only real tell-tale sign of that is Waterman hasn't quite got into the Terry character yet. His private detective role seems slightly off, , but that could also be down to the writing. It's still fantastically entertaining. Many think Series 1 is the best,. True, the stories never got as gritty again, but a lot of the humour between the characters hadn't quite fully formed yet. No sign of Chisholm & Jones and Dave sparingly used. It definitely got better.. Also, The Winchester doesn't look as it should!

The Bounty Hunter

The issue with Minder was that you had to be careful about glorifying low rent criminals. It was a fine line you had to tread and not upset the television regulators.

This episode sees Minder acting more like Robin Hood which makes Arthur and Terry to be the good guys.

Arthur helps out an old friend who got swindled out of her late husband's insurance payout by Freddy Fenton over some land investment in Spain. The police can do nothing about it so Arthur sends in Terry to look into it.

Terry's investigations leads to a chain of people who blame each other, bad luck and bad business decisions. When he finally gets to Freddy Fenton (Derek Jacobi) he tells Terry that he himself is broke and on benefits. However Freddy is living a double life as Arthur finds him in the casino gambling and driving a Rolls Royce.

Terry uses his dodgy mechanic friend Des to turn the tables on Fenton. Jacobi gives Fenton a touch of sneering class.
