HOMICIDE –FLASHBACK - 1966
This is episode 66 of the top-notch Australian Police series, HOMICIDE. This series ran 510 episodes between 1964 and 1977. It follows the Homicide squad of the Melbourne Police Force.
The episode starts on a street in busy downtown Melbourne. A beautiful blonde is walking up to an office building. A car pulls up on the street and a man exits. He walks up behind the blonde. The man, David Mitchell, calls out to the woman, Carmen Duncan. The woman turns, laughs, then tells Mitchell to leave her alone. Mitchell responds by pulling a large revolver and putting four rounds into Duncan. He then jumps back in his car and flees as a crowd gathers around the dead woman.
The Police are called and Detectives Leonard Teale and Les Dayman are soon on the scene. They get a good description of the shooter, and his car from the many witnesses. The episode now goes into flashback mode as the story unfolds as to the reason for the murder.
Mitchell, a Joe average, has asked a girl he just met, Duncan, to pose for a photograph in a park. Mitchell fancies himself a decent photographer and wants a nice shot to enter in a local contest. Duncan figures it might be fun and agrees. The two become friends after the photo takes first prize of 500 pounds.
Mitchell is soon annoyed when this friendship is interrupted by offers to Duncan to work as a model. Mitchell wants her all for himself. Duncan of course is pleased with all the attention she is now getting. Her new modelling career soon has her in furs, jewels and plenty of folding cash.
Mitchell is starting to become a pest and Duncan has her new "friends" have a word or two with Mitchell. These words end in a right curb-stomping for Mitchell. This leads to Mitchell confronting and killing Duncan on the street.
The Police soon have Mitchell identified and the search is on. They go through his apartment and talk with his landlady. The Police also check out Mitchell's workplace. No joy at either place, so the Police widen their search. Mitchell is hunted down at a small out of the way cabin.
Detectives Teale and Dayman kick the doors and find Mitchell sprawled out on a couch. Beside him is an empty bottle of sleeping pills, and a suicide note. They rush the man to the emergency, but he expires on the way.
