An excellent Fred episode
katierose2953 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This is a really great episode that highlights the darker side of Fred and deals with her past. To understand it, you have to go back to the final five episodes of season two. That's when we're first introduced to Fred, then a missing grad student. It turned out that she was sucked into the alternate dimension of Pylea, where humans were treated as cow slaves and Fred was stranded for five long years. It understandably messed with her head and she's just now recovering from the ordeal. This episode deals with her trauma and leads to her break up with Gunn. It also sets the stage for the Wes and Fred romance that drives a large part of season five. All in all, you shouldn't miss it.

The episode revolves around Fred and the new physics paper she's written. It's causing quite a stir in the brainiac community and Fred is thrilled to be back among physics stuff and scientists. Angel, Gunn and Lorne are bored and confused by her theories, but they agree to go to hear Fred's guest lecture at her old college. Wes sneaks into to see her speak, and as Team Angel looks on, a portal opens up right over Fred's head. She's nearly swept back into an alternate dimension. Fred is terrified and goes back to writing on walls for awhile. Soon she realizes that her old professor is behind the portals and that he's been sending a lot of students into other dimensions. Fred decides to get some revenge and kill him.

Gunn and Angel try to talk her out of it. They say that if she murders the professor, it will always weigh on her soul. Fred won't listen. She goes to Wesley for help. Wes agrees to assist her in coming up with a plan. When another portal almost gets her, she heads to the university. While she's there, Gunn and Angel arrive. Angel fights one of the professor's demon goons. Fred opens a portal, ready to send the professor to another dimension. Gunn tells her that she can't do something like that and live with herself. Rather than have Fred have the professor's death on her conscious, he steps forward and snaps the professors neck himself. Then he tosses the body into a portal. Afterwards, Fred and Gunn can't look at each other.

There are some excellent parts to this episode. I just love Wes and this episode really highlights his continued longing for Fred. He's reading her articles and actually understanding it. He's sneaking into her lecture and smiling at her jokes. He's helping her plan her revenge and saving her from a portal. Plus, there are some nice Wes and Lilah scenes in this episode. I actually think that they're starting to care for each other more than they know. He accepts that armored helmet she gives him as a "gift," not a "bribe." Which is sweet. It's too bad that the helmet doesn't come back into the show later on. And Lilah follows him around, which confuses Angel and kind of shows that she's getting emotionally attached to Wes. Also, this episode really shows the harder side of Fred. She's usually so sweet that when she decides to really kill her professor, you just have to go "woah!" Finally, I love Angel all happy that he's semi-famous on the internet. "They talk about me in the chatty rooms?!?"

On the down side, why doesn't Gunn just let Fred toss the professor into a portal? It's such a good plan, in a poetic justice sort of way. I don't see why Gunn had to hurt his own sense of morality by killing the guy first. Also, on a nit-picky note- Fred wasn't an undergrad history student in LA, who changed her major like she says here. Season five's "Hole in the World" shows some flashbacks of her saying that she moved to LA from Texas specifically to attend the graduate physics program.

My favorite part of the episode: Fred practicing her speech for Angel, Gunn and Lorne. Lorne's bored, horrified, "ick!" sort of facial expression when she asks them to come to the lecture just cracks me up.

You know what they say about payback? Well, i'm the b!tch
SleepTight66610 February 2007
Warning: Spoilers
You know what they say about payback? Well, i'm the b!tch - One of my favorite 'Fred' episodes. I've always been fascinated by portals and other dimensions (hence I love 'Farscape', 'Stargate' and' 'Sliders') and I think that this episode manages to give you that impression well on how it would feel like to get swallowed by one. The main reason on why to love this episode is because we finally get to see dark 'Fred', ready to take revenge on the son-of-a-bitca that sent her to pylea in the first place. The Wes/Lilah relationship also keeps fascinating me -Oh, look. a bribe, how thoughtful, it's a real shame that 'Wesley' doesn't really care that much for 'Lilah'. And then of course you got the Connor/Cordy action, him teaching her how to fight a vampire and telling 'Angel' how she likes to steal the covers. Though it's a good thing that 'Cordy' went back to 'Angel' at the end -Were we inlove?. Another thing I loved were 'Angel's photographic memory, they should have used more often, and of course finding out that they talk about him in the chat rooms -They talk about me in the chatty rooms?. Only thing that's a shame is that this episode ruins the Gunn/Fred relationship for all the wrong reasons, he murders the professor for her and instead of being grateful she completely starts to ignore him? shame. CLERK: You guys know how it is. You hear things, like from a friend of a friend's roommate. You don't know if they really happened. GUNN: Like the story about the girl, the cat and peanut butter? ANGEL: That one's true. Long story. CLERK: Like, yeah, you're Angel, right? There are whole forums on you in chat rooms, man! Who knew you actually, like, existed?! (9.0 out of 10)

Didn't Fred send herself to Pylea?
gbowdeniv9 February 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Don't get me wrong, I do like that they added a back-story episode for Fred. With the exception of the episode about her parents coming to visit, I felt that her character could have been explored a lot more than it was in the series. This episode, however, confuses the viewer. Back in the finale of Season 2, "There's No Place Like Plrtz Glrb", we learn that not only did Fred send HERSELF to Pylea by reading out of a book and opening a portal (we see this in Cordelia's earlier vision), but during the scene in the cave when Angel and Fred discuss the words she's written on the cave walls, she admits using the same words that she used to send herself to Pylea to try to get back.

ANGEL: I know these words. These are the words we used to open up the portals. FRED: They're not words. They're consonant representations of a mathematical transfiguration formula. I used to think that if you said them out loud and in the right order, the quaking and quivering would- ANGEL: You mean opening a portal. (Angel then suspects she's unknowingly been opening the portals in Pylea and sending things to the Earth dimension.) So you see, she sent herself to Pylea. I found it very difficult to simply accept that this professor had anything to do with Fred's disappearance, even after Fred's discovery of a hidden portal book in her professor's office. The second attempt on her life through her cell phone call just confirmed that there was someone trying to kill her, but nothing was ever explained about how he did it to Fred the first time or why. Had he planted the book that sent her to Pylea in the hopes that she would find it there and read that specific passage aloud? Had he told her to go to the library to look up mathematical transfiguration formulas as she states the words to be? Wouldn't she then already have had an idea that the professor was behind it from the beginning?! It all just seems rather disconnected and unbelievable storytelling that makes you question what you already know about the series.

We need more Fred episodes
limetalhead30 September 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Fred being a "science nerd" is actually kind of a turn on for me. Smart women who are that cute should be respected. That's why Fred would've been a better fit with Wes. He was smart, understood her "nerdiness", had a similar sense of humor and actually got her. She and Wes were always a much better fit and should have been put together way before season 5. Gunn was just a wannabe nice guy who basically kissed Fred's ass to get her. Fred basically raping Gunn when he started reading her article sickened me. No punk ass thug deserves someone as hot as her with legs as great as hers. OK, enough of that now.

This is one of the times where we get to see the darker side of Fred. Realizing that your professor was responsible for you ending up in Pylea all along would anger anyone. Her wanting to kill him made it even more apparent. And is anyone surprised that she turns to Wes for help. As much as she thinks she really loves Gunn, she knows that Wes' way of thinking will help her out without making her feel as guilty. In the end, Gunn snapping the professor's neck came as a huge shock. The only good that came out of it was it was one of the major contributing factors that led to their breakup.

The One Where Fred's Professor Opens A Portal...
taylorkingston29 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I really like this episode. It went a completely different way than I thought it would.

In this episode, Fred writes a physics paper, and get's invited to her former college, as a guest lecturer. Whilst she's giving a paper, than no one can really understand, including Angel and Gunn, who are sitting in the audience for support, a giant portal opens above Fred's head. Fred's head. Funny. Angel and Gunn close the portal. We later find out that it was her old college professor who opened it. And that he was the one who sent Fred to Pilia (don't know how to spell). And it wasn't just Fred he sent. It was anyone he was threatened by, intellectually. That's really rude. Sending people to Pilia. Mean person. After Fred finds this out, she plans to kill him. Then she decides to send him to Pilia for revenge, which in my opinion, is a good punishment. But before she pushes him into the portal, Gunn snaps his neck, so Fred wouldn't have to carry any blame. That's kind of nice, I guess.

Overall, I give this episode an 8 out of 10.

Kinky dinky: Connor remarks that CC steals the bedcovers much to Angel's distress. Gunn mentions that Fred kept him up all night and was unstoppable.

Know the face, different character; 4

Buffy characters on Angel; 16 Wetherby, Collins and Smith. Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike, Buffy, Wes, Faith, Darla, Dru, The Master, Anne, Willow and Harmony

Questions and observations; Really not good, silly plot and although there's some powerful emotional stuff really far below par. First time we ever see CC's parents. Now when we see Angel recreate the conference room scene at the Hyperion is that just a photographic memory or a spell he casts? Love the satire on the Angel fans, Angel referring to the 'chatty rooms'. Love Fred's Ripley moment, "I'm the bitch!".

Marks out of 10; 6/10 and maybe that's generous

So Fred made the noose that took out the evidence.
Gore_Won17 August 2009
Warning: Spoilers
So to speak...

Unlike Buffy's defeat of Glory, the conclusion of this episode works a lot worse ethically speaking. I don't want to talk spoilers, but suffice it to say that Buffy made sure Glory was left alive. Getting off on a technicality should not be what life is about, what this show is about.

I've read that one difference between Buffy and Angel is that the former clearly delineated good from wrong. All too often, I feel, the latter takes the question too lightly.

This episode exemplifies that.

A Fred Focused Episode
Samuel-Shovel14 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
In "Supersymmetry", while giving a talk at a physics convention, Fred is almost sucked into another dimension again. Worried about a social regression, Angel and Gunn try to figure out whose out to get her. A weird chemistry begins to form between Connor and Cordy. Lilah and Wes continue their rocky relationship.

Fred figures out that it was her old professor who tries to banish her again and that it was him that made her go to Pylea the first time. She wants to kill him but Angel and Gunn refuse. She enlists Wes's help in the endeavor. Gunn shows up and kills the man instead, not wanting to watch Fred kill him and regret it later.

Cordy returns to the hotel to live with the gang, unsure of where she rightfully belongs.

Time out... I thought Fred did that to herself way back when? Now we're retconning it to this professor sending her instead? That's fine I guess, just a little strange.

Anyways, this episode is all about Fred, developing her character a bit more. She always felt a little less developed then the rest of the gang so it's nice when we get a Fred-centric plot.

Gunn's decision to dedicate his own morals for Fred'a benefit was interesting and a bit unexpected. I honestly didn't see that coming. Who knows how it'll affect Gunn moving forward.

Despite the fact that I enjoy a Fred-focused episode, this one still falls a bit flat. The plot is a bit humdrum and the Cordy-Connor subplot is gross and creepy. Not sure why they decided to include that...
