Dru and Darla continue to steal the show
katierose29524 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
In some ways this episode does "redefine" the characters. It's basically the second part of "Reunion" so "Redefinition" has Wes redefined as the Angel Inc. crew's leader. Lila and Lindsey redefined as directors at Wolfram and Hart. And Angel redefined as someone caught between Angel and Anglus; Someone who's merciless and hard and willing to punish the guilty, not just protect the innocent. All in all this is a really cool episode, that ends Dru and Darla's crime spree and sets up the next part of the season. You won't want to skip it if you're watching on DVD.

"Redefinition" picks up right where "Reunion" left off. Angel has fired his crew and set off on a mission of vengeance. He's determined to bring down Darla and Dru. Wes, Cordy and Gunn are hurt by Angel's attitude. They head to Karitos, where they end up drinking and singing. When Cordy has a vision of a woman in trouble, the three of them set of to save her on their own. Their success inspires them to keep Angel Inc. open without Angel.

Meanwhile, Lila and Lindsey are the only survivors from the massacre in the wine cellar. The rest of Wolfram and Hart eyes them suspiciously, thinking that they might've been involved in Dru and Darla's plot. Eventually though, they're made acting co-heads of the Special Projects division. Darla and Dru continue work together, gathering an army of demon to spread mayhem and terror. Angel kills their demon goons and then sets Dru and Darla on fire. Darla realizes that he's not Angel or Angelus now. He's acting in a new, heartless way that sort of scares her. She and Dru are hurt and out of commission. Wes once again tries to get through to Angel, but Angel is off on a new mission: The destruction of Wolfram and Hart.

There are some great parts to this episode. I just love watching Angel being all bad ass. He's so dark and mean that I always end up smiling. And with Angel out of the picture, it's Wesley who steps up as team leader, which is cool. For the first time, Wes is coming into his own. In England, he followed his father. In Sunnydale, he followed Giles. In LA, he's been following Angel. Now Cordy and Gunn are looking to follow HIM. Suddenly, Wes is the one directing the action. This is his initial step towards the strong person that he will become. Also, I really like Lindsey and Lila's bickering. He's annoyed that she's alive. She's annoyed that Wolfram and Hart may have her killed. Dru and Darla are pestering both of them. It's just fun. You just have to laugh when Dru decides that she likes Lila best because, "She's wicked." Darla nods, "Yeah, they're both sweet kids." I just adore Dru and Darla together.

On the down side, Darla really should have listened to Dru's ranting about fire. It would have saved her a lot of pain and bandages. Drusilla might go off on tangents and talk in riddles, but she's also psychic. Spike seems to be the only one who really pays attention to her predictions, which is a shame. Also, I'm really sorry that Dru leaves LA, because I just love watching her. She didn't even get a scene with Wes, Cordy, Gunn and Lorne. It's a shame.

My favorite part of the episode: Gunn, Cordy and Wes singing "We are the Champions" at Karitos.

Angel Gets Even Darker... Somehow
Samuel-Shovel28 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Angel's always been a dark, moody figure but this new Angel just might take the cake! After firing the rest of the team, Angel begins training solo in preparation to stake Dru & Darla. The rest of the team decides to keep fighting the "good fight" after talking to Lorne. Lilah & Lindsey wrestle for power as an incoming shakeup at the firm heads their way.

A solid follow-up to the previous episode, I was worried that Angel would cave immediately and bring back the rest of the team and go back to the status quo but that doesn't happen. He maintains this new persona and even ups the ante with his training, defeating an assemblage of demons vying to work for Dru & Darla. Cool new Angel doesn't even talk as he severely burns his former vampire friends.

Where will this new Angel take us? I'm not sure but this darkness surrounding him promises to lead to some great new battles ahead.

Angel goes Punisher
Joxerlives4 February 2012
Warning: Spoilers
REDEFINITION

The Good; Angel goes Punisher, as extra-crispy Darla says "Who the hell was THAT?". Plus "We are the champions..."

The Bad; Darla and Dru seem to spend an awful lot of time on fire, other vamps vaporise much quicker.

Best line: Dru "Galloping, galloping still he'll come!"

Jeez, how did they get away with that? The ears gag, funny but hooooo....!

Apocalypses: 4

Angel Clichés Damsel in distress; 17

In disguise; 7

DB get's his shirt off; not topless but some vest action 11

Cordy's tattoo;3

Cheap Angel; 5

Fang Gang in bondage: Cordy: 5 Angel: 8 Wes: 3

Fang gang knocked out: Cordy: 10 Angel: 12 Wes: 5 Doyle; 1 Gunn; 1

Kills: 4 vamps and 12 demons for Angel really racking them up. I demon for Gunn Cordy: 5 vamps, 1 demons Angel; 22 vamps, 31 and 1/2 demons, 3 humans, Doyle; 1 vamp Wes; 1/2 a demon Kate; 3 vamps Faith; 16 vamps, 6 demons, 3 humans. Gunn; 5 vamps+ 2 demons.

Fang Gang go evil: Cordy: 2 Angel: 2

Alternate Fang Gang: Cordy: 2 Angel: 6

Characters killed: 30

Recurring characters killed; 4;

Total number of Angel Investigations: 1 or 3 depending on which way you look at it? 4, Angel, Cordy, Wes and Gunn

Angel Investigations shot: Angel: 10

Packing heat; Wes; 2 Doyle; 1 Angel; 1

Notches on Fang Gang bedpost: Cordy: 2 ?+Wilson/Hacksaw Beast Angel: 1;Buffy Wes; 2; Virginia and the bleached blonde

Kinky dinky: Gunn says Angel is 'going Commando', does he mean the action film or without underwear? Dru and Darla are looking for 'muscular slaves'. I know a few people who'd gladly volunteer. Once again Dru wants Angel to punish them for being naughty, she likes the idea of flogging but not of churches.

Captain Subtext; Is the attraction between Lindsey and Darla real? Dru seems to like Lilah. Wes denies that his arse is 'pansy'.

Know the face, different character; 2

Parking garages; 5,

Guantanamo Bay; Poor old Merl get waterboarded

Buffy characters on Angel; 13 Wetherby, Collins and Smith. Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike, Buffy, Wes, Faith, Darla, Dru, Master

Questions and observations; Virginia's back, hooray! Wes intends to sing Cat Stevens, I'm guessing 'Morning has Broken' rather than 'Father and Son' or 'The First Cut is the Deepest'. In the end they pick Queen, good choice. Darla wonders why people always assume a man has to be involved in a woman's business? Angel smokes again.

One thing you can say about Angel at least he's consistent. It's always some little blonde driving him over the edge
SleepTight66627 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
One thing you can say about Angel at least he's consistent. It's always some little blonde driving him over the edge - A voice-over episode? Oh man, how much I wish the show would have more of these. What an amazing episode, the end of one of the best three-part episodes that I have ever seen, and pretty much the end of the first part of the season as 'Drusilla' leaves us and 'Darla' appears in only two more episodes. The season gets pretty light from here on and is not as good, but still excellent. But this episode was also the beginning of many story lines, among them are the fang gang that got fired and now carries on the mission as a trio, I really love those three together and find their scenes in Caritas quite hilarious as they get drunk and sing 'We are the champions'. Another shiny new storyline is the rivalry between 'Lindsey' and 'Lilah', now that 'Holland' got eaten, those two get promoted as co-vice president until one of the gets the axe. But the best storyline is 'Angel' who has completely turned dark without turning into 'Angelus', Wolfram & Heart's little plan all along. I was truly shocked when he put the two vamp-girls on fire. Amazing episode all around, probably season 2's darkest hour - . DARLA: You know, in a perfect world, Angel would be here right now, helping me burn this city to the ground. This is his job I'm doing. But where is he? Probably flogging himself in a church somewhere. DRUSILLA: Ooh, flogging! Eew, churches. (10 out of 10)

Drusilla: We could have a thousand soldiers, and still he'd come... Galloping, galloping, still he'll come.
bombersflyup17 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Redefinition is about Lindsey and Lilah dealing with the aftermath of the wine cellar massacre and Angel training for a showdown with Darla and Drusilla.

Not much of an episode this one. Cordy, Wes and Gunn decide to continue the mission without Angel. Darla tries to recruit some toughs, but Angel shuts it down. I don't see why all these demon fighters would show Darla and Drusilla the respect they did anyway. Much of the episode's Lindsey and Lilah, which is okay, but time could be better spent. I've always thought Lilah losing a potential assassin was hardly equal to Lindsey teaming up with the enemy and running out on the firm, but looking at it from a broader perspective with all Wolfram and Hart's activities in later seasons, access to a telekinetic assassin may be significantly more important than Lindsey even.
