"Aunt Bee - CALL the man!"
PudgyPandaMan26 August 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This is a classic episode from the Andy Griffith show and one of my favorites. It features the infamous line "Call the man" that Andy repeats numerous times to his Aunt Bee.

This episode is from season 4 and originally aired March of 1964 (one month before I was born). Aunt Bee learns from Clara that the new discount butcher in town is running a sale on a half a cow. Clara laments that she doesn't have a large freezer, but Bee realizes she does. So she buys the meat and stores it in a freeze (that she bought used for a bargain) on the back porch. When she plugs it in, it moans and shakes but eventually begins to run. Temporarily. It begins giving them problems and Andy tells Bee to call the repairman in Mount Pilot. Instead she calls Gomer. He is no help at all, except for finding Opie's old ball and a mouse trap underneath. Andy finds out and emphatically tells Bee again "Just CALL the man!" Meanwhile, the freezer completely quits and her meat is going to spoil. In desperation, Bee goes to her usual grocer and confesses what she has done. She has pulled all her meat to his store in a little red wagon, with every dog in Mayberry following, to see if she can store it in his freezer until something can be done about her freezer.

This is a charming story and has some good life lessons on getting what you pay for. It's also, about true friendship and how Bee's original butcher is kind and generous enough to store meat in his freezer that she bought from his competitor. The discounted meat, by the way, ends up being tough as shoe leather. You have to see this episode to hear a frustrated Andy repeatedly tell his Aunt to "CALL the man!"

Aunt Bee stands her ground much to Andy's dismay
mloessel2 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Aunt Bee is a proud woman. She is the woman of the Taylor home and when she gets her mind made up will stand firm. In this episode she has a freezer that's on its last leg. Aunt Bee's best friend, Clara Edwards, suggests she buys 150 lbs of beef at a bargain price. What Aunt Bee doesn't know is the aged and well worn freezer is about to go down for the count. She buys the beef as the freezer does its best but takes a final breathe much to the chagrin of Aunt Bee. Aunt Bee does her best to find someone local to fix the ailing freezer (such as Gomer Pyle) but Pyle fails. The Sheriff repeatedly tells Aunt Bee to call the repairman from Mt Pilot but Aunt Bee believes he'll charge to much and balks at his recommendation. She finally relents and the repairman is brought in.

The repairman tells Andy that the freezer is on its last leg and recommends the Sheriff purchase a new freezer. Andy agrees. Aunt Bee, true to her personality, feels Andy could've purchased another freezer much cheaper. In the final scene she does her best to convince Andy that a less expensive freezer is out there.

Roast beef on a week day?!
kellielulu3 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Aunt Bee never met a bargain she could pass up. Andy gets after Aunt Bee for over doing it and pointing out a bargain isn't always a bargain. She has a cumbersome sack of sugar ( one of the cheapest things you can buy) but spills some as she fill the sugar bowl, proving Andy's point. He also teases her about the used freezer she bought and the only thing that's ever been kept in it is a dead mouse ( who jumped in there to keep warm) . Still undeterred Aunt Bee buys a half side off beef from the new butcher as it's on sale. She and Opie store it all in the freezer but Aunt Bee keeps out a roast to soften up Andy with a delicious meal . Andy is surprised by the dinner ( candles and all) . Andy delivers a line my family started using " roast beef and it ain't even the weekend? Folks will really think we're getting uppity ! " We use it when something is different at dinner .( using the good dishes and it's not even the weekend, folks will really think we're getting uppity !). Things don't go as planned, the meat is tough, the freezer isn't working right and causing electricity problems. But Aunt Bee refuses to call the repairman. She calls Gomer but he can't do anything. Over and over Andy tells her "Call the man! " She talks to her real butcher and friend and agreed to store it. Bee and Opie put it on his wagon and set to Mr Foley's but a pack of dogs are after the meat! Andy sees them but tells Bee Mr. Foley shouldn't have to pay for their mistake. Andy calls the man while Bee is at a church meeting and buys a new one. Bee is angry with Clara for mentioning a bargain but instantly thinks they could have found a discounted freezer !Clara knows of a warehouse stocked with discount appliances!)

Sometimes a Bargain Isn't a Bargain!

Warning: Spoilers
Charming episode... So many things that are not only adorable, but relatable. Especially if you grew up in this era! I love Aunt Bea and love her particularly in this episode. She loves her family well and serves them well. She's only trying to help Andy for economic reasons but it is slapping her in the face! There's many of us, including myself, that have been there done that! There are several scenes that are just absolutely adorable! I love the one with Andy on the phone and glances out.. says oh it's nothing it's just Opie & Aunt Bea with a Coastal Wagon with a pack of yapping dogs following them

Aunt Bee at Her Best
Frances Bavier's heartfelt portrayal of Aunt Bee is nowhere better seen than in this episode. She IS Aunt Bee. And Mr. Foley's character is heart tugging, as the sincere butcher holding on to the soon to be obsolete concept of providing the best service to his customers.

I did notice one line making Bee look pretty foolish in finding a freezer repairman--she tells Andy "we could get that man who fixed my clothesline" (Seriously?)

Also, to replace the obvious absence of beloved Barney the writers gave Gomer some good lines in a short scene which works just right. Of course it wont please those missing Barney. But this story has so much more to recommend it than big laughs.

This episode documents the "good old days" in retail business when store owners were interested in their customers. There's much more here; watch for Bee's single word "typhoid" in the final scene. Overall, she was a wonderful actress on this series.

True Then, True Even Today
cpolster24 March 2022
Even with a limited cast this episode is one of my favorites. It shows what some will go thru to save a dime. Again it shows Ms Clara Johnson and her sometimes wrong advice and again for Aunt Bee believing what she says. Even without Barney in this episode you will have a few good laughs.

Many of you probably know a few as I do, that they will go to the limits to save a dime and end up having more troubles in the long run rather than to Call The Man in the first place.

Bee the Obstructionist
Hitchcoc11 December 2019
I found the portrayal of Aunt Bee to be tiresome and stereotypical. Yes, she is a bargain hunter (like all busybody women--as they seem to think), but her digging in and refusing to get someone to fix the stupid freezer is beyond the pale. She bought the meat and has a chance to redeem herself, but is too stupid to listen to reason. Now, obviously she is a loving individual and works so hard for the family, but at times the way we see her is so silly and irrational.

More memorable, than funny.
vitoscotti18 May 2022
Story has some good moments. Gomer trying his hand at freezer repair with no knowledge was funny. Aunt Bee & Opie lugging the cart of meat followed by yapping dogs is memorable. Some classic trouble making Clara manipulating Aunt Bee.

Aunt Bee for this episode is made a super tight wad who's cheapness dictates wrong decisions. Starting to see a back stabbing Clara (Hope Summers) who seems to enjoyi instigating trouble. Don Knotts is again missed. There was nowhere to go for humor but Gomer.

The whole idea of an outdoor freezer seemed a stretch. Who has a freezer on their porch? The meat is in a malfunctioning freezer exposed to summer heat, then carted through downtown. Then, no repairman until the next day. I wouldn't eat the beef.

Odd epilogue with the new freezer causing electrical problems. Andy talks about cussing in front of Aunt Bee that was out of character.

Aunt Bee Won't Call "The Man"--- And I'm Fed Up
MeTVFan123420 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I never watch The Andy Griffith Show, but one day I decided to watch an episode, and it happened to be this one. However, any hopes of enjoying The Andy Griffith Show were dashed when Aunt Bee bought a budget freezer and would not get it repaired.

So what happened?

So in this episode, Aunt Bee buys a budget bargain bin crap used freezer, and stores meat in it. But-- it's not just any meat, it's bargain meat she bought from a new butcher in town, not their usual one.

As no surprise to any one, her crap freezer breaks, and her meat is going to go bad. Andy pleads to Aunt Bee, to simply call a repair man, however, she refuses to. She then calls Gomer Pyle, and he can't fix it, because he is Gomer Pyle. Finally, she asks her original butcher (who she didn't buy the meat from) to store it for her.

Andy is mad that Aunt Bee would dare to ask the other butcher to store the meat. Keep in mind, this could all be solved if Aunt Bee would just call the repair man, which is referenced a million times in this episode. "Just call the man!"

Finally, Andy just buys her a new freezer.

What a waste of 30 minutes. Don't even bother watching this episode.

Tiresome Aunt Bee
parkave-235346 February 2021
I know that it's 1964, but it's still annoying to see Aunt Bee unable to leave the house in episode after episode without her silly hat and white gloves. 👎
