How Could She Possibly Pass a Driving Test?
Hitchcoc25 December 2019
Having never driven before and using a straight stick, Aunt Bee has enough driving acumen to take a road test. She can't even get the car to go five feet without it jerking along. She has an accident before getting a license and then must go through the pain of telling Andy.

Classic episode after 2 stinkers

An episode about Aunt Bee driving just was a great idea to work with. Needing Andy's approval was so 60s. Helen (Aneta Corsaut) detractors forget the many times she's sweet as pie as here. Frances Bavier & George Lindsay are hilarious together. In TAGS color Aunt Bee episodes sometimes they're too sappy. Not here. All about laughs. George Lindsey scenes are my favorites. Salesmen deluxe, Andy Goober-go Bee Goober-stay masterpiece, goose necking for a free meal, teaching herky-jerky drivng Bee. Seems teaching & learning to drive manual transmission would be a daunting task. Made a better story than a simple obvious automatic. Classic Floyd (Howard McNear) telling Andy about the dingo dog. Andy seems to get a lot of comfort confiding in father figure Floyd even though Floyd just agrees, goes off topic, or just parrots what Andy says rarely giving any true insight.

Strange episode

I have always found this episode troubling. At the beginning of this series, Aunt Bee can already drive! She has her own car! She arrives in it when she comes to live with Andy and Opie. Also troubling is Andy's terribly backward thinking about women.

We've all been through this !

This is a particularly funny episode because all of us drivers have gone through something similar. When Andy gets involved, Aunt Bee has to decide whether to fess up or let it slide. She eventually comes clean to get Andy off the hook. Another entertaining episode about people really caring about others.

Andy such a misogynist jerk in this episode.

I despise the color episodes for a multitude of reasons. Most notably the absence of Barney Fife as a regular character and the new characters like Howard Sprague just didn't cut it for me. The black and white also gave the show a timeless quality. Another reason I despise the color episodes was because of Andy's personality change. He seems to get more impatient and short tempered (and sometimes he could be a downright jerk like in this episode). Andy trying to treat Aunt Bee like she was one of his children he could control. Aunt Bee was a grown woman, she had the money to pay for her car, and had a good teacher in Goober. Andy was just terrible to her.
