Warning: This The Expanse article contains Major spoilers for Season 5, Episode 3.
While most of The Expanse Season 5 will be dropped on a weekly basis, we got the first three episodes of the all new season all in one go—and what a three episodes they are. The last of the three installments, “Mother,” ends with one of the stealth asteroids Marco Inaros launched at Earth at the end of Season 4 finally hitting the planet. We talked to the director of the episode—none other than Thomas Jane (aka Miller) himself—about how the climactic scene came together, as well as, generally, what it was like to step behind the camera for an episode of The Expanse.
Den of Geek: I am curious how this all came about? What made you want to direct an episode of The Expanse? This feels like the sort of thing that maybe you talked about...

Jon Bernthal has stated on a number of occasions that he holds Frank Castle very close to his heart, and he’s still not given up on the idea of returning as the Punisher somewhere down the line. He’s not the only actor to have fallen in love with the comic book vigilante after being cast in the role, though, and fans also remember Thomas Jane’s spin on the character fondly.
Admittedly, the 2004 movie wasn’t great, but Jane was committed to the part and did a solid job in the lead. Unfortunately, however, the plot and script were about as formulaic as it gets, while moving the action from the seedy underbelly of New York City to the more tropical climate of Tampa for budgetary reasons was hardly reflective of the Punisher’s origins.

Hellmouth is the new one from Exit Humanity director, John Geddes. And writer of Pontypool, Tony Burgess. Hellmouth is a neo-noir horror tale, created with the usage of contrasting colors and other such visual techniques. Some would say that this is in the style of Sin City, which is helped along by the fact that the first third of the film is black and white, with a few traces of color. Personally, I would compare it to Dark Country before Sin City, but I’m one of only 5 people that bothered to see that nice little piece of horror-pulp starring Thomas Jane, so Sin City is probably a more accessible approach to explaining the style to expect. What I’m saying is, a lot of detail is focused on creating the visual style of the world, and it makes for a stunning experience. There are a few frightening scenes along the way.

Thomas Jane is getting back in the director's chair - after Dark Country - to helm Wet House, based on a script by Jack Reher. The film is loosely based on Charles Dickens' "The Signal-Man" and we've got a look at some teaser art inside.
The film concerns a psychiatrist treating a patient that they encounter in a Wet House that is able to predict tragic events. As the film unfolds, the doctor starts to lose grip on their sanity and is haunted by something sinister within the establishment.

Thomas Jane will direct and star in a new horror-thriller titled The Wet House.
The film is set in an institute where drug addicts beyond recovery go to die, and is loosely based on Charles Dickens's ghost story The Signal-Man, Bloody Disgusting reports.
Dickens's book tells the story of a railway worker who is haunted by a spectre that informs him of train crashes before they happen.
Jack Reher provided a screenplay for the movie, which is described as being tonally similar to the likes of Jacob's Ladder, Poltergeist and Secret Window.
Jane, best known for starring in The Punisher and Stephen King adaptation The Mist, made his directorial debut on animated feature Jonni Nitro in 2000 and helmed Dark Country in 2009.
The Wet House is yet to be given a release date.

Former Punisher and Mist-battler Thomas Jane had a rough ride with the studio bods on his last directorial effort Dark Country. He publicly complained about the final cut and the lack of a theatrical release, but the experience doesn't seem to have burned him too badly, since he's about to head back behind the camera for The Wet House, in which he'll also star. The title refers to an establishment that's kind of the polar opposite of a rehab facility: a wet house is apparently a place where substance abusers and addicts go to die, when their afflictions place them beyond recovery. It's a new one on us, but writer Jack Reher seems confident that it's a thing. The film's story involves a doctor at the facility - presumably Jane's character - enduring a haunting and slowly losing his mind.Reher's screenplay is loosely based on, of all things, a short story by Charles Dickens.

Way back in July I had the opportunity to sit down with Tim Bradstreet and discuss several of the past, present and future projects that were happening at Raw Studios. One of the projects which we discussed in depth was the graphic novel for Dark Country. They had just released it in time for the San Diego Comic-Con and I was one of the first to get my grubby little hands on it! Dark Country may sound familiar to some, especially fans of Thomas Jane, as he acted and directed a film of the same name that was released back in 2009. What you may not know is that Thomas Jane's Dark Country film was inspired by the short story written by Tab Murphy. Thomas Ott's graphic storytelling in Dead End and Greetings from Hellville were also hugely inspirational when it came to directing Dark Country. The fact that...

The Dark Country movie was released a few years back and was directed by Thomas Jane, who also starred in the movie, along with Lauren German and Ron Perlman. A graphic novel was released earlier this year, featuring art from Thomas Ott, and we’ve been given a preview to share with our readers.
“At the end of the road… the nightmare truly begins. In 2007, actor/filmmaker Thomas Jane went off to New Mexico to film his noir/suspense film, Dark Country, a twisted, psycho-noir about a couple forced to deal with a dead body en route from Vegas. The result was a mind bending, idiosyncratic, EC Comic-style ride into the noirish landscape of damnation. In an effort to create a new experience, Jane had the artist adapt the original short story by Tab Murphy that inspired the film. Thomas Ott’s adaptation is presented in his signature ‘silent’ format,...

Thomas Jane seems to be the latest actor who, faced with a lack of decent roles being offered to him, has decided to turn to writing and directing instead. A couple of years back, he started up his own production company, Raw Studios, and directed a film called Dark Country. Now he is also reportedly working on a western called A Magnificent Death from a Shattered Hand, and at Comic-Con this past weekend he unveiled a new short film called Dirty Laundry. It's not your ordinary short film, however: it finds him reprising the role of Frank Castle, better known as The Punisher. While I'm generally not interested in fan films, I can appreciate that Thomas Jane did this just for fun and out of love for the character. It's a shame that his turn as Frank Castle in the 2004 film The Punisher wasn't particularly well-received, but fans really seem to embracing this.

I sat down with Raw Studios creators Thomas Jane (The Punisher, The Mist) and Tim Bradstreet (Hellblazer) on Thursday to talk about their visions for film, comic books, and stories that become both, such as the Twilight Zone-esque Dark Country. These two are intensely involved in their creative work and very dedicated to dark storytelling. They’re also Monster Kids, through and through. Huzzah!
Famous Monsters. You hear so much about Comic-Con having becoming this gigantic, mainstream, corporate thing with toy companies and whatnot… I have comic creator friends who complain that it’s not the way it used to be. How does Raw Studios still fit into Comic-Con for you?

There’s a lot to do at Comic-Con. From panels, screenings, checking out the floor and gawking at cosplayers, it’s pretty much impossible to do even a fraction you want to. But every year, no matter what, I always make it a point to go check out the Raw Publishing booth.
It’s small, not flashy, and usually tucked away. But it’s there where Raw head honchos, Tom Jane (The Punisher, *61, Stander) and Tim Bradstreet, hang out for a good chunk of the week. Selling and signing books, interacting with fans, and generally just being cool dudes.
This year at Comic-Con I had the awesome chance to sit down and chat with Tom and Tim about their current and upcoming projects, as well as a super-secret panel that’s happening this Saturday. Check it out!
Dread:You’ve got something secret going here at Comic-Con, some kind of big top secret project.

Thomas Jane‘s directorial debut, Dark Country was a promising introduction for Jane as a director, and now three years later, he’s got another directorial feature in the works: a western. Jane described his upcoming film – which is nicely titled A Magnificent Death From a Shattered Hand - as “a classic Western with all the stuff I like it.” Based on what he seems to like, that probably involves men acting like real men. A few months ago Jane mentioned his plans for a possible 3D Western, and when we asked for an update on the project, he said it’ll probably shoot this year, with Nick Nolte involved as well, “I wrote a Western, and I wrote it for Nick Nolte. I sent it to Nick Nolte, and he loved it. I’m hoping to shoot that sucker this year. If it doesn’t happen this year, well, it...

Jane won't be staying long at the Con, as after his Saturday Night Celebrity Panel and Surprise Screening he will be forced to leave San Diego prior to suffering the wrath of Hollywood Suits who are sure to be enraged by Jane's personal screening that pays homage to the art of comic book characters and not Hollywood cash! HollywoodNews.com: Thomas Jane is a proponent of 3D. He made his “Dark Country” film in 3D. And last week, he hosted the second annual 3D Film & Music Festival. So it was only a matter of time before a cheeky TV station brought up the idea of “Hung 3D” — as in his ribald HBO series about an unusually well-endowed high school basketball coach-turned-male prostitute.
Jane laughs at the suggestion. “Yes, if we ever do decide to do full frontal with Ray Decker, I think we should do it in 3D,” he dead-pans. “Things look bigger in 3D.”
Jane confesses he is as surprised as anyone that the dark comedy is in its third season — which launches Sunday (10/2). “I never expected this to go beyond one season, to tell you the truth. But the chemistry between the actors — especially between me and Jane Adams — is really strong. And the writing continues to be strong.

With cameras on surfboards and jetskis, helicopters, boats, and even from behind the talent’s head – the new Storm Surfers 3D has every angle covered.
The Storm Surfers franchise, produced by 6ixty Foot Productions in association with Firelight Productions, was initially developed as an adventure series for the Discovery Network, following Australian surfing legends, Tom Carroll and Ross Clark Jones as they did battle with the biggest swells in the Southern Ocean.
First they surfed a ‘mythical’ never ridden before wave in the treacherous seas of Bass Strait simply called Dangerous Banks. In their second outing, they explored New Zealand’s rugged coast off the remote Fiordland. This time they cast a wider net. With help again from meteorologist and Swellnet.com.au’s webmaster, Ben Matson, they chase storms that rise from Antarctica to bombard our cold southern coast, and they do it all in 3D.

One of my favorite actors in the biz these days, "Hung" star Thomas Jane never shies away from talking comics and comic book movies when I interview him. That didn't change when I spoke with him about the upcoming double-screening of "Dark Country," his noir-fueled directorial debut, at Long Beach Comic Con.
The film will receive two 3-D screenings this weekend, including a Saturday night screening with commentary from director and star Jane, production designer Tim Bradstreet (no stranger to the comics world there, either), and Ray Zone, the 3-D supervisor on the film. While we discussed "Dark Country" at length during the conversation, we also spent a little while chatting about past, present, and future comic book movies and his take on where the genre is headed.
"I think I dodged a bullet there," said Jane of "Jonah Hex," this year's critically panned live-action film based on DC's scarred bounty hunter.
The film will receive two 3-D screenings this weekend, including a Saturday night screening with commentary from director and star Jane, production designer Tim Bradstreet (no stranger to the comics world there, either), and Ray Zone, the 3-D supervisor on the film. Almost a year ago today, I spoke to actor Thomas Jane about his directorial debut, "Dark Country" — a noir-fueled thriller with a scary, Hitchcock-style twist that was filmed entirely in digital 3-D. Starring Jane, Lauren German ("Hostel: Part II"), and Ron Perlman ("Hellboy"), "Dark Country" will receive not just one but two 3-D screenings attended by its director and lead actor at Long Beach Comic Con this Halloween weekend.
The veteran actor is currently enjoying the success of his HBO television series "Hung" (set to premiere its third season in 2011), but he took time out to chat with me about this weekend's "Dark Country" screenings, and remind the world that the film is not only his passion project, but also the very first fully digital, live-action 3-D movie.
MTV News: Tom, here we are again, talking about "Dark Country" right before Halloween. Last time around, the film had just been released on DVD.

The first ever 3D Film Festival begins this Thursday in Hollywood and Hung's Thomas Jane is set to host. Jane recently made his directing debut with his new 3D psycho noir film, Dark Country, which will be screened at the festival. Jane is a passionate defender of the beloved, yet often controversial technology and gives us a look at what attendees will get to see. He talks about his new film and what projects he's got coming up, including projects with his company Raw Studios that he owns with Steve Niles and Tim Broadstreet. He also gives us a brief promo for the new season of Hung. It's short, but oh boy is it to the point! The festival will be presented by RealD and The Los Angeles Film School. Paramount Pictures and director Brad Bird are currently deep in the process of casting their upcoming action adventure film Mission: Impossible 4. Tom Cruise is returning to reprise his role as Ethan Hunt, and Jeremy Renner was just cast as a new experienced operative that will work along side Hunt in the story. Renner will most likely end up taking over the franchise.
Now the names of three young actresses have leaked out that are currently in the running to play a young female operative in the film.
Lauren German - Has been in films such as Dark Country, Hostel Part II, Happy Town TV series, and a bunch of other films I haven't heard of before.
Paula Patton - Can be seen in films such as Mirrors, Swing Vote, Precious, and Hitch.
Kristin Kreuk - We all know her from Smallville and Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li.

You know, that “Mission Impossible” movie that might not be called “Mission Impossible” at all? Or maybe it will be called “Mission Impossible”, and you can ignore that last sentence. Yeah, that one. The latest news has three actresses scheduled to screen test for a major female role, which may or may not be the lead. According to the trades, the role is that of “a young female operative”, and the ladies looking to get a piece of the Cruise pie include Lauren German, Paula Patton, and “Smallville’s” Kristin Kreuk, last seen in the mystifyingly awful “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li”. We know where Kreuk has been, but what about German and Patton? German (top, left) has been in some genre stuff like “Hostel 2″ and “Dark Country” with Thomas Jane, while Patton (below) would seem like the most blockbuster-ready, having been in “Deja Vu” with Denzel Washington...

I'm not normally one to post about casting news that isn't finalized, but this is a good story about three very beautiful actresses fighting for one role. Paramount is trying to get things moving on Mission: Impossible IV (which won't even be called that) and with Jeremy Renner as the male lead, their focus has shifted to finding a female lead. Yesterday, Deadline (via SlashFilm) named Lauren German (Hostel: Part II, Dark Country), Paula Patton (Deja Vu, Swing Vote, Precious) and Kristin Kreuk (Euro Trip, Street Fighter, "Smallville") as at least three of the actresses who are testing for the role. Quite a wonderful line-up, right? We don't know much about the story or the characters that will be in it, except that this role is for "a young female operative." Other than that, we know Tom Cruise will be back but may not be playing Ethan Hunt for too long.

If at first you don’t succeed, take the animated role.
Therein lies the lesson of Thomas Jane’s quest to play the role of comic book anti-hero Jonah Hex. The star of HBO’s popular series Hung once lobbied to play the theatrical role of Jonah Hex and, though he fell short in that attempt, Jane has found another path to the character as the disfigured cowboy’s voice in the DC Showcase Original Short, Jonah Hex.
The all-new, animated Jonah Hex appears as a companion piece on the upcoming Special Edition Blu-Ray and 2-Disc Special Edition DVD release of Batman: Under the Red Hood, the latest entry in the ongoing series of DC Universe Animated Original PG-13 Movies coming from Warner Home Video on July 27, 2010.

With a name like happy town, you know there is something sinister lurking beneath the surface. ABC's new mystery/thriller/creepshow is centered in the small town of Haplin, Minnesota, or "Happy Town" as the all-too-perky real estate agent calls it. A few years ago, a rash of kidnappings plagued the town, and, with not a shred of evidence left behind, the townspeople dubbed the culprit the Magic Man. The show is crammed full of stars that genre fans will recognize: Lauren German (Hostel II, Dark Country), Sam Neill (In the Mouth of Madness, Jurassic Park), Amy Acker (Angel, Dollhouse), Steven Weber (The Shining TV miniseries), M.C. Gainey (Unearthed), and Frances Conroy (The Wicker Man). happy town...

I Sell the Dead made a move to DVD and Blu-Ray today, with extras now available. The film stars Dominic Monaghan (Lost), Larry Fessenden (Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever), Angus Scrimm (Wishmaster), and Ron Pearlman (Dark Country) as two grave robbers who bite off too much of the supernatural to chew. Bonus features run the gamut of cast and director commentaries to making of featurettes (visual effects). A blend of the comedic, action, and horror genres, I Sell the Dead was one of the better releases from 2009. More details on this title below.
The synopsis for I Sell the Dead here:
"18th century justice catches up with a pair of grave robbers. With only a few hours to go before his date with the guillotine, Arthur Blake (Monaghan) tells his life story to Father Francis Duffy (Ron Perlman). Before long, Arthur spills the beans on how he got started in...

You can tell right away that Desert Son directors, James Mann (Brandon Nicholas co-directed), started out as a cinematographer. In fact, this stunning trailer for his intriguing indie thriller features some of the best desert photography I've seen since probably Dark Country. He actually manages to make it look as romantic as he does a hell-on-earth.
At it's heart, Desert Son is a coming of age movie set around an interesting high concept teen thriller. A boy is abandoned in the desert and joins a couple of other kids to form a home for themselves. To survive they must commit crimes against residence of the nearest town. Of course, things go completely south. Reminds me a little of Max Jacoby's recent film, Pa film, Dust, actually with a bit more teen angst and crime.

October 6th, 2009 saw two very momentous occasions. Firstly, and most importantly, it was my birthday. Secondly, Thomas Jane's first feature directorial effort (he's listed as having directed Jonni Nitro, but even I'm clueless as to what that is) Dark Country was released on DVD. Our own Rob Hunter listed the film as a rental in his DVD recommendations but that didn't stop me from heading out and purchasing it. Then, in a bit of good fortune, I promptly tossed it on the "to watch" pile and forgot about it for three weeks. I say good fortune because not watching the standard, 2D version of the film allowed me to walk into a small, one of a kind screening in late October, the first ever Annual Halloween screening of the film - in glorious 3 dimensions. So my first experience with the film would be as intended - in a theater, with...

Back in August, we brought you the news that the comic book series "Criminal Macabre" was headed to theaters courtesy of Universal Pictures. The series, which follows drug-abusing, foul-mouthed private detective Cal McDonald as he investigates all manner of gory supernatural mysteries, regularly featured a familiar face as the model for McDonald on its cover: "Punisher" actor Thomas Jane.
When I recently got Jane on the phone to talk about his directorial debut, the noir thriller "Dark Country," I had to ask him about "Criminal Macabre," too—more specifically, whether there's been any talk of him bringing the downtrodden hero to the big screen.
"[Cal McDonald] is a fantastic character," Jane told MTV News, adding, "I’m born to play that role."

Recent film history is littered with exciting and ambitious genre films that wound up bypassing theaters and going straight to video instead; Michael Dougherty’s Trick ’R Treat and Thomas Jane’s would-be 3-D Dark Country are just two of the more recent examples. And for a couple of years after chilling audiences at festivals, Oren Peli’s Paranormal Activity seemed destined for the same fate. DreamWorks snapped up the $11,000 production following a Slamdance Film Fest screening in January 2008—and then announced its intentions to remake Activity on a bigger budget, consigning the original to be seen only on DVD, if at all.
All that changed in the last couple of months. After previewing the movie to enthusiastic audience response, Paramount (which had taken over handling Activity) decided to send the movie into high-profile midnight bookings and give the public the chance to Demand It! for their areas via the official website.

Thomas Jane, the star of HBO's Hung, also boasts a cinematic career full of vampire slaying, punishing, and mutant chronicling, which sets the perfect stage for his directorial debut. Dark Country, in which Jane also stars, is a brooding thriller created for DVD about a honeymooning couple who hit a man with their car when driving in the desert and their ensuing hell of dealing with his undead body. Jane spoke with Movieline about his directorial inspirations, his wife Patricia Arquette, and Hung's impact on his consummate love of his penis.
