The slasher mash-up Freddy vs. Jason just celebrated its 20th anniversary six months ago, and now we have some very sad news to share about one of its cast members: Chris Gauthier, who played the Jason victim Shack in the film, has passed away at the age of 48. Variety reports that Gauthier passed away suddenly and unexpectedly from “an unspecified short illness”.
In addition to Freddy vs. Jason, where his character was felled by a flaming machete thrown by Jason during the cornfield rave sequence, Gauthier’s acting credits included 40 Days and 40 Nights, Insomnia, Agent Cody Banks, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, Dead Like Me, Riding the Bullet, Stargate: Atlantis, Masters of Horror (where he had a role in John Carpenter’s Cigarette Burns), The Butterfly Effect 2, Stargate: The Ark of Truth, Supernatural, Space Buddies, Watchmen, Harper’s Island, Sanctuary, Beyond the Black Rainbow, Iron Golem, Smallville, Continuum, Eureka, R.L. The mockbuster industry is a fascinating entity. Chief among the studios that specialize in mockbusters (ie. low-budget knockoffs of popular studio titles) is The Asylum, the company behind the "Sharkando" films. In 2023 alone, The Asylum has released a riff on "Cocaine Bear" titled "Attack of the Meth Gator," the latest installment in its "Transformers" ripoff franchise, "Transmorphers: Mech Beasts," and its own animated version of "The Little Mermaid" featuring the voices of Steve Guttenberg and "E.T." star Dee Wallace. And they say cinema is dead!
Shane Van Dyke, the grandson of acting legend Dick Van Dyke, got his start as a writer on the mockbuster circuit, penning films like "Titanic II," "Paranormal Entity," and "Transmorphers: Fall of Man" for The Asylum in the late aughts. Around that same time, he also teamed up with his brother, Carey Van Dyke, to co-pen the studio's "Street Racer" -- a riff on the "Fast & Furious" films,...

Talk about reviving a franchise from the grave! Twenty-six years (26!) after Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1996 action film Eraser comes a franchise reboot featuring none of the original cast and with two veterans of franchise reboots and Dtv sequels at the helm, director John Pogue and writer Michael D. Weiss. Yet whilst both filmmakers have experience in reboots and sequels they also have some other fantastic movies under their belts – Pogue wrote all Three of The Skulls movies (the second being a personal favourite) and Weiss penned some classic Dtv movies that went on to be staples of the early days of budget DVDs – Octopus and it’s sequel, Crocodile and US Seals 2… Yes, Eraser: Reborn has quite the pedigree.

For its list of new releases of February 2022, HBO Max is bringing back one of its biggest original series.
The Ridley Scott-directed sci-fi epic Raised by Wolves helped launch HBO Max back in 2020 and now it’s finally back for another season. Raised by Wolves season 2 premieres with three episodes on Feb. 3. This season will continue the conflict between future atheists and theists on a remote planet, while two androids raise some kids.
February 2022 also sees the end of another, more recent HBO Max hit. Peacemaker airs its finale on Feb. 17. Thankfully that same day sees the premiere of another exciting original. Dream Raider is a Mandarin-language sci-fi thriller that carries some big Inception vibes.
There aren’t many original movies of note this month, but there are a lot of recent hits coming to HBO Max as library titles. Nightmare Alley arrives on Feb. 1, followed by The Many Saints of Newark on Feb.

From the director of Annabelle and starring Joey King (The Conjuring), Ryan Phillippe (I Know What You Did Last Summer), Shannon Purser (Barb from Stranger Things) and Sydney Park (The Walking Dead), Wish Upon is a wickedly chilling story about an alluring object imbued with sinister and dangerous powers, a cautionary tale that takes the ‘be careful what you wish for’ theme to frightening new levels…

So, when her dad (Phillippe) gifts her an old music box with an inscription that promises to grant the owner’s wishes, she thinks there is nothing to lose. Rosemary’s Scabies: Leonetti Does His Best James Wan Impression
Sure to take its place on future lists of cinematographer’s unfortunate attempts at directing, John R. Leonetti’s Annabelle, a sort-of prequel to a subplot from 2013’s The Conjuring, is technically assured though lacking in anything innately original or insidiously creepy. Basically another bargain basement housewife-in-peril horror film, Gary Dauberman’s script plays like another cheap Rosemary’s Baby knock-off, attempting to prove that a Los Angeles apartment complex is just as spooky as anything you’ll encounter in Manhattan. With no time wasted on comic relief as it takes itself surprisingly seriously (you can forget about all those Marlon Wayans shenanigans with ‘Abigail’ from A Haunted House 2), Leonetti leaves most of the heavy lifting to our own familiarity with the basic material and our lowered expectations with carbon copy.

A number of films have been inspired by the cases of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, most notably The Amityville Horror. The most financially successful was 2013's The Conjuring, in which the couple played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga assist the Perron family (Ron Livingston and Lili Taylor) with the demonic presence troubling their home. That film, which made over $318 million worldwide, is bookended with the tale of another of their cases. In it, the Warrens help a young nurse dealing with the sinister presence inhabiting a doll given to her by her mother. The film closes with a scene set in the basement room where the Warrens keep demonically possessed curiosities, the doll "Annabelle" in her glass case reigning as the most evil and feared. It serves as a perfect introduction for this week's prequel, Annabelle.

John R. Leonetti is no James Wan. "The Conjuring" is one of the most exciting surprises I've had in recent memory. I didn't expect anything of it when I sat down to see the horror film in a screening room at what used to be the New Line offices on Robertson. It was me and a handful of other people in the room, and for the first time in a long time, I found myself genuinely caught up in a horror film, scared, absorbed in a way that often escapes me. "The Conjuring" is as confident a ghost story as I've seen in recent years, and Wan deserves whatever bump he gets from that film's success. I can see why "Annabelle" got made. I can hear the meetings in my head where the film was discussed, and it makes logical sense. After all, the opening sequence in "The Conjuring" is...

Remember that evil doll from “The Conjuring”? It’s the kind of hellish looking children’s toy that you think no one would ever possibly give to a real child because just looking at that nasty smile would give it nightmares. Obviously, the first thing you thought walking out of James Wan’s film was, “That creepy doll needs its own movie,” right? Didn’t everyone think that? It sure seems that way, because that’s exactly what we now have with the prequel “Annabelle.” And if you think making a feature-length movie out of the backstory of a sinister doll—from the director of “The Butterfly Effect 2” no less—might be stretching the concept a bit thin, you are correct. Honestly, if you stumbled across this in a video store—if there’s still an open video store within a 50-mile radius of where you live—and picked...

Are all dolls creepy, or is it just dolls in horror movies because we know there's something that's supposed to be creepy about themc I ask because the doll in Annabelle, a prequel to the 2013 horror hit The Conjuring, is freaky as hell from the jump and something I would definitely never want in my house. The creepy factor of the soon-to-be-possessed doll at the center of this new thriller aside, Annabelle is a largely effective little thriller, too bad it has a god awful ending. Yet, Annabelle holds that frequent, horror movie mixture that has some audience members yelling "Just get rid of the doll! Set it on fire!" while others are left screaming, both in fright as well as good fun. At least, this was the mood with my audience, most of which seemed to have a pretty good time. And, before you ask, no, you don't need...

Remember that creepy little doll at the beginning of "The Conjuring"? Well, it's time to get to know her a little better. The first teaser for the period horror spin-off "Annabelle" examines the persuasive doll's "life" before the events in "The Conjuring." It's unknown if the film will lead directly into the beginning of "The Conjuring," in which Annabelle appeared alongside Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. Produced by James Wan and directed by John R. Leonetti, "Annabelle" stars Annabelle Wallis (no relation to the doll), Ward Horton and Alfre Woodard. Leonetti was the cinematographer on "The Conjuring" as well as the "Insidious" films, although his filmography as a director -- which includes "The Butterfly Effect 2" and "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation" -- doesn't exactly inspire confidence. Still, the teaser has the requisite chills and the doll herself is still just about the creepiest...

When a movie like The Conjuring breaks as many box office records as it did, it’s no surprise that studios are now clamoring to put a sequel into production to capitalize on the dynamite success. With that in mind, it didn’t come as a shock to anyone when New Line announced plans for The Conjuring 2 a few months back, reacting to the tremendous numbers and phenomenal reviews regarding James Wan’s terrifying blockbuster masterpiece. It’d be silly not take advantage of one of the most successful horror movies in recent memory, right?

The best example of this is the thousands of direct-to-dvd sequels that litter the walls of movie rental stores across the country. Most are pale reflections of the originals.

I'm not involved in any way. Any information that says I'm a producer on it is false. I think they're shooting in August, but Scott Spiegel is the one who can answer all questions on the film. Here's the thing.
I kind of hate Eli Roth. I thought his character was fun in Inglourious Basterds, but I think he's a shit director. Really, really just talentless and lacking vision without a real grasp of how to effectively use actors, and how to develop a plot that doesn't revolve around gore. But that's just me. I hated Hostel, not because it was gross and excessive (though it was), but simply because it just it's a shitty movie. As for Cabin Fever, the less said, the better.
All of this is my way of saying that the good news is that Eli Roth is not going to be involved in Hostel 3.
The bad news is that, well, they're making a Hostel 3. This time around it's being directed by Scott Spiegel (From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money), based on the screenplay by Michael Weiss (Journey to the Center of the Earth,...

Stage 6 Films is gearing up for an August shoot for Hostel: Part III. Stage 6 is the direct to dvd division of Sony Home Entertainment, is responsible for such home video releases as Zombie Strippers!, Starship Troopers 3: Marauder, Boogeyman 3, Vacancy 2: The First Cut, The Grudge 3, Messengers 2: The Scarecrow, The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day and 30 Days of Night: Dark Days. Scott Spiegel (From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money) will be directing from a screenplay by Michael Weiss (The Butterfly Effect 2). Bloody Disgusting is reporting that the sequel will take the horror franchise to Las Vegas, "where a bachelor party goes horribly wrong." Sounds like a horrible idea (and this is coming from a guy who actually liked the second film in the series). The following comes from an unconfirmed tipster on the IMDb forums: It seems like it's going to ...

As most of you know by now, we're one of the very, very few sites of our kind that refuses to work with studio publicists. In the last couple of years, that's become even more important to us, as other popular movie blogs have sprung up to become essentially another arm of studio public relations efforts. Junket interviews, set visits, and trailer and movie poster exclusives -- that's just movie promotion. Granted, all exposure is a form of promotion, but at least with us, you can trust that it's not being influenced by access or publicists threatening to deny access. We have no access, and therefore, no one can hold it over our heads.
One of the perks, however, of that access is interviews with celebrities. Granted, most of those are junket interviews, which generally elicit nothing at all of import. They're just a series of impersonal sound bites offered...

More highlights from the Great White North's incredible film festival!
The world is an unfair place. How else to describe how a guy like Buddy Giovinazzo can make a film like Life is Hot in Cracktown, a year ago, and have it be rejected by every major film festival the world over, despite its being goddamn genius? We saw the international premier on Monday, and while not a horror film, it is the kind of movie fans of the genre need to embrace. Like Aronofsky’s adaptation of Hubert Selby Jr’s Requiem for a Dream, Life is Hot in Cracktown chronicles the lives of a number of lost souls and their crushing slide from streets to the gutter, and from the gutter, into hell. Unlike Requiem for a Dream, Giovinazzo’s film is not filled with pretty teen starlets, and does little to glorify hardcore drug addiction. Requiem for...
