The following remembrance was written by Deborah Davis, Mark Urman’s wife.
From Anatole Litvak’s “Anastasia,” the first movie he saw as a child at a picture palace in the Bronx, to Bradley Cooper’s “A Star Is Born” (his choice for this year’s Best Picture), Mark Urman was a man with a boundless passion for cinema. In the course of his nearly 50 years in film, Mark felt blessed to work with some of the greatest luminaries in the business, from Joseph Losey, David Lean, and Bernardo Bertolucci to Roman Polanski, Sydney Lumet, and Julian Schnabel.
He also delighted in encouraging talents as they emerged, including Ryan Gosling, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Lynette Howell, Jamie Patricof, Christian Bale, Liv Tyler, Marc Forster, Natasha Richardson, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, Kevin Smith, Cary Fukunaga, Lee Daniels, and Bill Condon.

Ride of Passage: Hunt’s Belated Sophomore Effort Crests Waves of Cliché
Perhaps the most surprising element of note in Helen Hunt’s Ride is the fact that this is her sophomore directorial effort following the 2007 debut Then She Found Me. While the previous film was adapted from a celebrated novel by Elinor Lipman, Hunt concocts her own original scenario here, serving as director, screenwriter, star, and producer. Painfully pedestrian and awkwardly rendered, Hunt’s film devolves into a nagging, ho-hum situational dramedy that spends entirely too much time focused on its anal-retentive protagonist’s break from an elitist shell of pretension rather than the central relationship upon which the narrative’s flaky emotional core is hinged.
Jackie (Hunt), a single, overly determined mother that works as an editor at The New Yorker, is about to see her 18 year old son Angelo (Brenton Thwaites) off to college. But upon going...

Since Helen Hunt hasn't been super busy in front of the camera, the star of The Sessions, Pay It Forward and As Good As It Gets has decided to get back behind the camera for a new comedy called Ride. The actress also stars in the film she wrote about a woman who follows her college dropout son (Brenton Thwaites of The Giver and The Signal) to Los Angeles as he pursues a life of surfing. Of course, this ends up being a life-changing experience for her as well. It seems like it's trying too hard to be a typical indie story self-discovery, but kudos to Hunt for taking the initiative to write and direct a film for herself to star. Helen Hunt is doing it all for her upcoming film.
On Monday, photographers snapped photos of the 50-year-old actress, who was hard at work filming the new movie "Ride," which she not only wrote, but is also directing and producing.
In the film, Hunt plays a magazine editor who discovers her son has dropped out of college to become a surfer. Her character follows the boy to California, where she meets a surf instructor, played by Luke Wilson.
Since "Ride" is all about surf and sand, Hunt should be spending the much of the following weeks beachside in swimsuits and wetsuits, as she's taking on the challenge of directing and starring in a film for the second time. (She was also in charge of the 2007 feature "Then She Found Me.")...

One woman really can do it all. That woman is Helen Hunt. She has written a script for a movie called "Ride," which she will direct, produce and star in. Hunt has been working on making the movie a reality for two years, Deadline reports, but only recently got the funding and cast together.
Joining Helen in the movie are Luke Wilson, David Zayas, Mike White, Richard Kind, Leonor Varela, Elizabeth Jayne and Brenton Thwaites.
Hunt plays the mother of Thwaites' character, who ditches school in New York to try surfing in California for the summer. His mom, a magazine editor, follows him and meets a surf instructor (Wilson) along the way.
This is Hunt's first screenplay and second time directing a feature, after 2007's "Then She Found Me," which she also starred in. Filming on "Ride" begins August 5.

Best recognized as a writer, Victor Levin has penned episodes for such popular television programs as the marriage-centered sitcom Mad About You and the 1960s set drama Mad Men, as well as scripted such charming movies as Win a Date With Tad Hamilton! and Then She Found Me. However, in 1999 he dabbled in directing, helming an ep of Mad About You along with a little known venture called The Successor. But his latest script, 5 to 7, has spurred his return to the director's chair, and has stirred up a fantastically promising cast. Mockingbird Pictures in conjunction with Demarest Films has unveiled a press release revealing six-time Oscar nominee Glenn Close (Albert Nobbs), Oscar nominee Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon), Bérénice Marlohe (Skyfall), Lambert Wilson (Of Gods and Men) and Olivia Thirlby (Being Flynn) have joined Anton Yelchin for this New York-set romantic comedy. 5 to 7 stars Yelchin as a young, aspiring ...

Meg Ryan will step behind the camera with the dramedy Into the Beautiful, her rep confirms to EW. As Variety reports, the feature is “being developed as a contemporary Big Chill with longtime friends reconnecting,” and as of now, there are no plans for Ryan to act in the film as well. But should she?
On one hand, this is material Ryan obviously connects strongly to, and if a role is right for her, it could remind audiences why they used to love seeing her onscreen. I think of something like Helen Hunt’s 2008 feature directorial debut, Then She Found Me,...

Subject: Helen Hunt, 47-year old American actress
Date of Assessment: April 6, 2011
Positive Buzzwords: Longevity, television, girl next door
Negative Buzzwords: Oscar, limited range, feature films
The Case: This week, we're dealing with yet another damn Academy Award winner and perhaps one of the greatest indicators that awards don't matter beyond a short-term improvement of the salary. In 1998, Helen Hunt won the Best Actress Oscar for her role in As Good As It Gets; she subsequently enjoyed a short run in a few high-powered blockbusters but then suddenly dropped off the Hollywood radar. Yet since the tender age of 10 years, Hunt's been working as an actress, although she didn't rise into mainstream popular culture until 1992's debut of "Mad About You." After seven seasons, a few Emmy awards, and a couple of blockbuster movies (including the aforementioned Oscar-winning role), Hunt pulled a Hollywood disappearing act for the most part. Indeed, the 1990s were hers,...

Colin Firth and Natalie Portman will be respectively presented the Desert Palm Achievement Award for Actor and Actress at the 22nd annual Palm Springs International Film Festival. The Awards Gala will kick off the 2011 awards season on Saturday, January 8 at the Palm Springs Convention Center.
This award is very fitting for both actors. Firth is receiving major Oscar buzz for his performance as King George VI in "The King's Speech," and Portman for Darren Aronofsky's "The Black Swan."

Still boyishly handsome at 47, actor Matthew Broderick ("The Producers," "Election," and, lest anyone forget, "Ferris Bueller's Day Off") continues to split his workload between stage and screen. In the last few years, however, his film career has been more low-key, from voiceover work ("Bee Movie," "The Tale of Despereaux") to indies like "Then She Found Me," "Diminished Capacity" and "Finding Amanda." Could it be that "Inspector Gadget" himself no longer finds Hollywood roles as satisfying to the soul?
His next stop in Indiewood is writer-director Josh Goldin's bittersweet debut "Wonderful World," which premiered at last year's Tribeca Film Festival. Broderick stars as bitter misanthrope Ben Singer, a failed children's folk singer and divorced dad who only seems to find solace in smoking too much pot and playing chess with his Senegalese roomie Ibou (Michael Kenneth Williams). After Ibou is hospitalized, Ben begins a heartfelt but frivolous lawsuit against the city for "depraved indifference,...

There have been some considerations that Helen Hunt should replace Maura Tierney on "Parenthood". NBC, according to THR, has approached the feature film star to join the series and Hunt is said to be weighing on the offer.
Hunt is supposed to take over Tierney's Sarah, one of the four Braverman siblings that become the center of attention on the series. She is a financially-challenged single mother who returns home to her parents and siblings in Berkeley, Calif. The other siblings are played by Peter Krause, Erika Christensen and Dax Shepard.
Tierney has played Sarah in the pilot before she retracted from the show because she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Last week, NBC released a statement that the actress has quit the show for good. "Maura Tierney regrets that she will not be able to continue her role on 'Parenthood' due to a conflict with the production...

Helen Hunt has been approached to join NBC's upcoming drama series "Parenthood," taking over the role played in the pilot by Maura Tierney.
The Oscar and Emmy winner is said to be considering the offer, which would mark her return to series television and to NBC, where she starred on the comedy "Mad About You" for seven years before segueing into features.
On "Parenthood," a contemporary take on Ron Howard's 1989 movie, Hunt would join an already strong cast.
The Ums/Imagine TV series, created by Jason Katims, revolves around four adult siblings -- three of them played by Peter Krause, Erika Christensen and Dax Shepard -- and their parents (Bonnie Bedelia and Craig T. Nelson).
Hunt would play the fourth sibling, a contemporary version of the character portrayed by Dianne Wiest in the film.

Yesterday came the yearly announcement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as it extended 134 invitations to several artists and executives "who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures" read the press release. Of course all of them can decline, but I wouldn't necessarily expect that to happen as all who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2009 to the Academy's roster of voting members. "These filmmakers have, over the course of their careers, captured the imagination of audiences around the world," said Academy President Sid Ganis. "It's this kind of talent and creativity that make up the Academy, and I welcome each of them to our ranks." The list follows below and reading around the best analysis I saw of it came from Nathaniel Rogers at The Film Experience who, among other things, pointed out the addition of longtime Darren Aronofsky's...

On Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences issued invitations to 134 members of the film community to join the group. There were a maximum of 166 open slots to fill this year, but the various branch committees endorsed fewer candidates than were proposed to them.
Hugh Jackman, who hosted the most recent Oscar show, has been invited to join. So have Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, James Franco and Michelle Williams. The list even includes a number of comic performers like Michael Cera, Seth Rogan and Paul Rudd.
Voting membership in the organization has held steady at just under 6,000 members since 2003.
New members will be welcomed into the Academy at an invitation-only reception at the Academy's Fairbanks Center for Motion Picture Study in Beverly Hills in September.
