Basic but it works

As a result of a war in heaven an angel is cast to a grey miserable earth. Once there he is forced to watch as his former glory and majestic form is stripped away to leave just another figure in the cold, huddled together against the rain.

Out of general interest I like to watch shorts as you never know what you'll get but sometimes they can be just great and well worth 4 minutes of your time. Here I didn't realise just how basic the film would be - it had no dialogue and only very basic animation. However that is not to say it didn't work. The plot was interesting but it relied too much on the character to bring a lot across with just looks and music. I personally wanted to understand more and, while it did an OK job, I would have welcomed more from it.

The animation is basic but works very well - it is all charcoal sketches on what looks like faded newspaper etc at times. It looks crude but it does manage to bring quite a lot across considering the look of it. The main themes come across and that isn't easy in this form only having 3 minutes to do it! The music was haunting at times and really contributes to the film in a big way.

Overall this is very simple but worth seeing once for anyone who has an interest in the power of animation. I know that many people are suddenly watching animated shorts as a result of the Animatrix - I'd like to think that a little short like this would benefit from this mass audience's sudden interest but I can't help feel that it is too low key to ever get such exposure.
