There are TV shows which are properly grasping the zeitgeist of their era and produce stellar viewing experiences. Some others are relying upon the acting capabilities of the cast to propel them into success.

And there are some others which just transcend all era-induced limitations to form a body of art which is condemned to be appreciated further down the road. This is Lifting.

Lifting takes place in the early 00s, portraying the escapades and frenzy lifestyle of 40 year old cosmetic surgeon Gerasimos. In an era which living large was the status quo for mid-to-upper class people in Greece, we follow Gerasimos in his conquest for eternal youth.

The main cast is perfect assembly of the-then Greek society, all of which possess certain quirks which would make some certain Coen brothers proud. Still, certain credit should be given to Nikos Alexiou for portraying the perfect second fiddle role for Gerasimos multi-faceted character to shine.

However, where Lifting truly shines, is its insightful social commentary; just like how Lynch takes jabs at suburban life, Romas and Chatzisofia expose the shallowness of extravagant life and the dangers unexpected wealth entails. Characters offer cautionary tales stemming from a PASOK dominating era of lush life, which are certainly found more and more true in todays political climates.

With Lifting's social commentary being its spearhead, it was no surprise the ratings plummeted. Viewers at the time were interested in buying their 3rd car, not being warned about what was coming right behind the corner. Still, it is a 9/10 only, because executive meddling forced a rather bland finale. It is a shame that there was no closing "see you in 25 years" remark in the finale.
