Top 10? Hell, the only 10! Well not quite, but damn close! We’ve actually tallied a solid list of ten horror/thrillers that happened to be set on Valentine’s Day itself. Now, some spend the entire day reveling in lovelorn lethality, some merely glance past the February 14th date, but in just about every case, old cupid’s shooting an arrow in the head, if not the heart. Ah hell, you’ve heard enough. Here’s the Top 10 Valentine’s Day Set Horror/Thrillers!
#10. Lovers Lane (1999)
Before Anna Faris was spoofing Scary MOVIEs and wooing the world as The House Bunny, she happened to stroll down Lovers Lane, a listless paint-by-numbers slasher flick about a man who went on an indiscriminate murder spree on Valentine’s Day 13 year prior, only to return to town to stalk and slash the victims’ children, foully disemboweling them with his hook-handed murder weapon. Lovers Lane...

When director Aaron Truss got in touch regarding checking out his latest film, the short Pareidolia, I jumped in feet first with a resounding yes. Why? Well, Truss had produced a great documentary on the VHS era, Cult of VHS, and this short film starred one of my all-time favourite actresses Diane Franklin… a performer whose roles in Better Off Dead, The Last American Virgin and later Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure had, I’m sure, shaped my idea of the perfect girlfriend and whose roles in Summer Girl and Amityville 2 stirred something in my teenage libido too!
For those unfamiliar with the term, Pareidolia is the scientific term for seeing meaningful images in random visual patterns. It’s what the Rorschach inkblot test is based on,...

With No Hard Feelings hitting theaters, it seems that studios might be trying to bring back hard R raunchy comedies. The gamble of taking a well-known actor and throwing them into a raunchy, sex-filled comedy may end up working out. Could this bring about a new wave of R-rated comedies? We can only hope. So what are some of the best sex comedies? Let’s look back at this hilarious genre and find out which ones make the cut.
Zack And Miri Make A Porno (2008)
Kevin Smith is not a stranger to the raunchy realm of comedies, but this film is maybe his truest sex comedy out of all of his filmography. Life-long platonic friends Zack and Miri are in trouble as they are both dead broke and have mounting bills as their rent is coming due. To make a large amount of cash very quickly, they...

From the ‘70s on calendar horror was all the rage with the slasher crowd; Black Christmas begat Halloween which gave us Friday the 13th and on and on, a red ‘X’ flooding the dates throughout the year. Of course we can’t forget birthdays either, so after Happy Birthday to Me we were offered Sweet Sixteen (1983), an interesting, sometimes icky film that leans closer to murder mystery than it does slasher.
Released in mid September by Century International, Sweet Sixteen got lost amid the masked mutilators and supernatural shenanigans of the day, but that shouldn’t deter any ardent fan of the era and those seeking a horror film grounded in story more than exploitation – depending on how it’s viewed.
The story of Sweet Sixteen has an air of Choose Your Own Adventure about it depending on which version you watch – the theatrical cut or the director’s cut.

Director Michael Lehmann was shocked when he looked at the New York Times and Los Angeles Times entertainment sections and saw there were no ads for the second week of dark high school comedy “Heathers.”
When the film opened on March 31, 1989, the indie film studio New World had taken out ads for the comedy that featured Winona Ryder and Christian Slater in career-defining performances.
“It had played at Sundance and had gotten a lot of attention,” he noted. “We were really looking forward to see what would happen when it hit theaters. The first weekend was great — a good screen average for a little indie movie like that. We were super happy.”
But without more ads they knew their little film would be in trouble.

Diane Franklin is an iconic 80s film actress, known for her dark curly hair and winning smile. Diane started with modeling, theater, commercials, and soap opera work. She then won the lead role as the dream girl, Karen, in cult classic The Last American Virgin (1982) and soon after played the daughter, Patricia Montelli in Amityville II: The Possession. Her break-out film role was the spirited French-exchange student, Monique Junot, opposite John Cusack in the off-beat comedy Better Off Dead. She also played the medieval Princess-babe, Joanna in the iconic comedy, Bill & Ted’S Excellent Adventure.
Diane Franklin in Amityville II: The Possession
Amityville II: The Possession was a 1982 prequel to the hit film The Amityville Horror (1979). It told of the true story of Ron Defeo Jr., who had massacred his family in 1974 in the house that subsequently sold to the Lutz family, who claimed it was haunted. Diane Franklin played Defeo’s younger sister.

Louisa Moritz, an actress who appeared in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and brought a good-natured joy to a stereotypical blonde bombshell persona in early ’70s fare like Love, American Style and Match Game but in more recent years joined other women in accusing Bill Cosby of sexual assault, has died from a longstanding heart ailment, her longtime friend and publicist Edward Lozzi announced.
Moritz was 72 and died at her home last week in Los Angeles of natural causes.

There’s nothing like a good mystery, and HBO’s Blackout (1985) has a central premise that’s hard to deny: You survive a car crash, but have no memory of who you were before. Until, 7 years later, someone shows up and insinuates that you were a man who murdered his entire family and then fled. Now, could you go about your life, or would you want to know the truth? And if you were a killer, would that impulse return?
HBO’s original programming was still in its infancy, so the film, which debuted on Sunday, July 28th, plays as a barely more graphic version of a network offering, which is fine anyway; Blackout offers enough story and characterization to diminish any desire for extra blood or sleaze.
Once more, to our faux TV Guide:

So you’re wading through piles of slasher films from the ‘80s, keen on discovering a lost gem far removed from the normal gang in the woods or high school sis-boom-bah stab and gab. You’re thinking maybe a different setting will yield a fresh take, already tired tropes blurring your vision and making the distinction between a hockey mask and a fencing one harder by the day. Well…have you tried the hospital yet? Most folks are terrified of the antiseptic halls and robotic empathy doled out by uncaring staff. (Yes, yes, they also save lives, I know. I’m trying to set a mood, dammit.) And if you do decide to enter the medical field, I strongly suggest you pay a visit to Hospital Massacre (1981), Israeli King of Schlock Boaz Davidson’s wild attempt at a horror comedy, where some of the humor is even intentional.

Cynicism isn’t hard to come by in the horror genre; any Italian cannibal or home invasion flick will satiate your desire for an outlook on man’s worst transgressions. Conversely, it’s even harder to find a film with such a buoyant feel that is at odds with the terror on display. Well, folks, may I present to you The Boogens (1981), an endearing charmer of a subterranean monster movie. By the time it’s over, you may want to give it a big old hug.
Released by Jensen Farley Pictures in September (with Paramount buying up the TV rights) on a budget of $600,000 Us, The Boogens did nothing to impress critics. However, a certain Stephen King loved the hell out of it, and his praise would grace the advertising as it did with his accolades of The Evil Dead (1981). (A King blurb held a lot of truck in those days.

“Hello, Boils and Ghouls” was a typical opening salvo from The Crypt Keeper, the wraparound host (and animatronic cadaver) of HBO’s inventive, creepy and more often than not, mordantly funny salute to the EC Comics of yesteryear, Tales from the Crypt (1989 – 1996). Throughout seven seasons, viewers were subjected to as much gore, nudity, and twisted morality as we could handle. God (or his underworld counterpart) bless premium cable.
Tales ran from June 10th, 1989 to July 19th, 1996, for a grand total of 93 episodes. That’s a lot of grue to ingest, and until ratings started to slip by Season Six, horror fans found it easy to lap up. And as with any anthology series, mileage varies and quality flickers to and fro – but Tales from the Crypt’s success is anchored in the very fact that it was allowed to live, and thrive, for as long as it did.

Electric Boogaloo was the name of the wacky 1985 sequel to the break dance epic Breakin’ – which I don’t know was worthy of a follow-up but if there was one studio up to the effort in the mid-‘80s, it was Cannon Films. Electric Boogaloo: The Wild Untold Story Of Cannon Films is the title of a new documentary that plays for one night only in St. Louis at Landmark’s The Tivoli Theater Thursday, September 17th at 7pm.
Israeli cousins Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, prolific salesmen with little regard for quality, bought Cannon Films for half million dollars in 1979 (it was founded in ’67) and turned it into an efficient assembly line of high-concept, action, and exploitation. Lovers of low-brow cinema could always count on a good time when that Cannon Films logo appeared on-screen. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Pt 2, the Sly Stallone arm wrestling opus Over The Top,...

Now available on Blu-ray and DVD from Anchor Bay Entertainment is Lost After Dark, a 1980s-set horror film that pays homage to that decade's slasher heyday while also instilling its own scares onscreen. For our latest Q&A feature, we caught up with Lost After Dark director/co-writer Ian Kessner, who discussed ’80s influences, a funny Robert Patrick anecdote, and his in-the-works remake of 1988's Waxwork.
Thanks for taking the time to converse with us today, Ian. Lost After Dark is a blood-splattered homage to ’80s horror films. What movies, TV shows, or other pop culture memories from that decade influenced your approach to Lost After Dark?
Ian Kessner: My pleasure, big fan of Daily Dead. The film that influenced my approach the most was the original Friday the 13th, but Halloween, Happy Birthday to Me and a bunch of others all found their way in there. I also...

In late 2014, Paul Thomas Anderson's latest film Inherent Vice - a psychedelic dive into the La of the past- screened at at a special BAFTA preview with the director on hand to take part in a post-film Q&A.
Ably marshalled by film critic Mark Kermode, the discussion touched on the director's Thomas Pynchon adaptation and his collaborations with Joaquin Phoenix and composer Johnny Greenwood. Perhaps most interesting of all, however, was Anderson talking about his all-time favourite movie.
When asked by Kermode to choose, Anderson replied quickly with "The Treasure of Sierra Madre. There's no competition, it's the best," before hesitating to ponder the merits of Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest.
"This is the game that's so f**king maddening," he said. "On the drive home you're like, no it's not Treasure of Sierra Madre its North by Northwest, it's Something Wild, it's Repo Men. The lists are so long.

Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films
Written and directed by Mark Hartley
Australia/USA/Israel/UK, 2014
Australian documentarian Mark Hartley crafts his third vigorous valentine to exploitation cinema, alongside Not Quite Hollywood and Machete Maidens Unleashed!, with Electric Boogaloo, an explosive trawl through the snarling ferocity of Cannon Films before its inevitable bankruptcy in the early 1990s. Whilst the former documentary in the cycle celebrated the boom in Ozploitation cinema of the 1970s and 1980s, and Maidens! took a appreciative scan of the laxly monitored Philippine film factory, this time the viewfinder shifts to the excessive and action packed oeuvre of Israeli movie moguls Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, whose 1979-founded company became an explosive production house in Hollywood during the Reagan-mandated 1980s. Much to the disgust of snooty critics and prestige-minded executives, Cannon (an apt name) forged repeated success due to their box office-incinerating brand of chaotic,...

Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films
Directed by Mark Hartley
Australia, 2014
From the late 70s to the early 90s, Menahem Golan and Yorum Globus, two Israeli cousins, ran the Cannon Films studio. The men produced dozens of mindless exploitation films, from Death Wish III to The Last American Virgin. Mark Hartley’s film sets out to define the producers’ legacy, with special emphasis on the men’s unorthodox and eccentric professional conduct. The result is a light, funny documentary that could benefit from the inclusion of more insightful material.
Both men started out in the Israeli film industry and produced more than 30 motion pictures before gaining tremendous financial success with the sexploitation movie Lemon Popsicle (later remade as American Virgin). The cousins moved to America shortly after in the hopes of securing international fame. Over the course of the next decade their studio established itself as a breeding ground for schlocky cinema.

★★★★☆The Star Wars of smut-tinged coming-of-age comedies, Bob Clark's Porky's finally gets a new high-definition lease of life this week courtesy of cult connoisseurs Arrow Video. Unlike The Last American Virgin, another recent acquisition of theirs which covers similar terrain, the years have been much kinder to this 1982 Us-set, Canadian-funded production. It's a better-acted and immeasurably funnier film then the countless imitators it spawned (including two inferior sequels). Set around a fictitious area in 1950s Florida named Angel Beach, the film follows a group of libidinous high school buddies who are forever cooking up ways to lose their virginities.

Most home video releases are mass produced and marketed by faceless conglomerates interested only in separating you from your hard-earned cash. If you look closely though you’ll find smaller labels who love movies as much as you do and show it by delivering quality Blu-rays and DVDs of beloved films and cult classics, often loaded with special features, new transfers, and more. But yes, they still want your cash, too. Our latest look at Top Shelf releases from smaller labels features two new Blu-rays from across the pond, and in addition to both being region B releases the two share a genre similarity too in that they’re both coming-of-age teen comedies. That said, they handle their themes quite a bit differently. First up is Gregory’s Girl which explores one gangly, Scottish teen’s efforts to woo the beautiful new girl at school. His friends are equally lost in a sea of hormones, but...

I’ve long been a fan of The Last American Virgin, no doubt due to my obsessions as a teenager with the ingenue that is Diane Franklin. Having enjoyed Better Off Dead (where she played a French exchange student Monique Junot) and then caught her “stirring” performance in Amityville 2: The Possession I was eager to see more of the sctresses ample charms. And that’s how I discovered Boaz Davidson’s The Last American Virgin…
The film follows three friends, Gary (Monoson), Rick (Antin) and David (Rubbo), as they stumble from one sexual escapade to the other, taking in nymphomaniac Latin dance teacher Carmilla (Moritz), a red-headed hooker who gives them crabs and a bevy of teenage girls eager and willing to give it up for a line of coke and a dance.

★★☆☆☆ Unlike the majority of previous films to have resurfaced via the esteemed Arrow Video label, the years haven't been particularly kind to 1982's The Last American Virgin - a grandiose title which suggests some kind of a smutty coming-of-age epic, but in reality only manages to deliver the grubby goods sporadically. Brought to the screen by infamous eighties producers Yoram Globus and Menahem Golan, the film is almost a virtual shot-for-shot remake of Lemon Popsicle, their bawdy paean to sixties American youth culture which was shot in their home city of Tel Aviv (and effectively launched the duo's careers).
Transplanting the tale of three shamefully horny teens to actual American soil - and set a couple of decades later than the original - Popsicle's director Boaz Davidson was also lured back on-board. With a budget which looks to have been mostly swallowed up by the purchasing of major jukebox hits...

Project X is not an off-shoot of the TV talent competition or a remake of the Matthew Broderick chimp thriller, but the latest in what seems to be an endless entry in the found footage / hand-held video genre, a film subset ( or conceit ) that is quickly wearing out its welcome at the multiplex. I suppose it really exploded with the box office smash over ten years ago with The Blair Witch Project and continues today with the horror series Paranormal Activity. Just weeks ago the format was used in the super-powered fantasy Chronicle. Now the shakey-cam is utilized for this new ” party ” comedy ( not the first found comedy - The Virginity Hit was a 2010 dud ). Will X fire up lots of big screen yucks or go down like warm stale beer?

The dust has finally settled and it looks like Academy Award–winning producer Brian Grazer will be producing the 84th Academy Awards telecast next year instead of director Brett Ratner. Ratner resigned from his position yesterday after committing two public gaffes while promoting his latest movie, Tower Heist.
Soon after, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences issued a press release announcing Grazer as the new producer in charge. "Brian Grazer is a renowned filmmaker who over the past 25 years has produced a diverse and extraordinary body of work," said Academy President Tom Sherak. "He will certainly bring his tremendous talent, creativity and relationships to the Oscars."

[1] Entertainment news over the past week has been dominated by one facepalm-worthy Brett Ratner remark after another, finally resulting in his stepping down [2] from his Oscar-producing gig. But there's no need to worry -- everyone's favorite walking PR blunder is doing just fine, with one '80s remake in the works and another one about to hit theaters after a long delay. In the midst of that Howard Stern interview during which he bragged about sleeping with a young Lindsay Lohan, Ratner also revealed his plans to remake the 1982 teen sex comedy The Last American Virgin. Meanwhile, the Ratner-produced Mother's Day [3], a remake of the 1980 Troma film, will finally be getting a North American release next year. More after the jump. Boaz Davidson's The Last American Virgin, itself a remake of Davidson's Israeli film Eskimo Limon, centers around three teenage boys on a quest to get laid. Though it...

Earlier today, whilst mired in a state of pure boredom, I found myself wondering if Brett Ratner‘s directing career in Hollywood was ending. It might sound like a crazy idea, but his recent wave of horrible comments — immediately following the underperformance of Tower Heist, his first movie in more than four years — and the slightly pathetic Oscar resignation made me think it wasn’t impossible.
But we’re talking about Hollywood, a land where offensive remarks and actions are forgotten at the drop of a paycheck; notions of such a disappearance were quickly dispelled. Ratner has some big projects, including the Spielberg-produced The 39 Clues, and I doubt those will get thrown out over some statements. Plus, when he wasn’t talking about his testicles during an appearance on Howard Stern (via ThePlaylist), the director announced his intent to remake The Last American Virgin.

A brief tangentially related rant in the middle of RatnerGate: I usually give remakes a relatively fair shake before they prove their worth (or lack thereof), but Brett Ratner's potential redo of the underrated '80s teen sex comedy The Last American Virgin, I cannot abide. News of Ratner's intentions slipped by in his recent Howard Stern appearance, understandably, but he had this to say: "I think I jerked off to [Lav star Diane Franklin] at least two hundred times." Please, universe, don't let this guy ruin the most surprisingly sensitive teen comedy of the '80s. #RatnerFreeRemakes, anyone? [Howard Stern via Cinema Blend]...

Less than day after departing his job as producer of the Oscars telecast comes word via The Playlist that "Rush Hour" and "X-Men: The Last Stand" director Brett Ratner is working on remaking 1982 comedy "The Last American Virgin".
The original, itself a remake of Israeli film "Eskimo Limon", was like many coming-of-age sex comedies of the period with a group of nerdy high school friends setting out to have sex (albeit with a bit more pathos and a rare unhappy but realistic ending). The film had a cult following but didn't achieve the notability of others like "Porky's" and "Fast Times at Ridgemont High".
More interesting is that it boasts a highly impressive soundtrack with songs from The Police, Blondie, Journey, Devo, The Cars, Human League, Reo Speedwagon and U2. No further details on when Ratner would get to work on this, he's still attached to helm "Hunting Eichmann" and...

We've talked endlessly about Brett Ratner's disastrous series of public appearances that got him fired from his Oscars job, to the point that I was convinced there was nothing more to say. But it turns out there was actual movie news hidden in Ratner's appearance on The Howard Stern Show-- you know, the one where he talked about sleeping with a much younger Lindsay Lohan? In the middle of a recollection about actress Diane Franklin, who "I think I jerked off to at least two hundred times," Ratner said he's actually planning to remake the film that featured her, 1982's comedy The Last American Virgin. Ratner was 12 years old in 1982, and in the same way that Transformers and G.I. Joes are making a comeback and preying on the nostalgia of that generation, it's apparently time for the raunch comedies of the era to come back. The Last American Virgin,...

I've personally written about The Last American Virgin so many times over the years, partly because it's the film that first introduced me to the teenage sex comedy way back when I was just a little kid, and also because the ending of this movie scarred me for life. The 1982 comedy, which is also a remake of an earlier Israeli comedy that produced multiple sequels, is definitely a little rough in spots, and is almost always overshadowed by a more mainstream teen sex comedy that arrived the same year, Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Both films dealt with themes of abortion during their more dramatic sequences, but Virgin had the more memorable soundtrack. If you want to know what it was like to be a teenager in the early 1980s, The Last American Virgin will show you, and then...

Though last night we learned that the Rush Hour and Red Dragon director would no longer be producing the 84th annual Academy Awards show with host Eddie Murphy after some disparaging remarks put him in a bit of a tight spot in the public eye, it doesn't sound like Brett Ratner will be bored at home (unless he actually watches the Oscars). In his interview with The Howard Stern Show (via The Playlist), the same one where he talked about banging Olivia Munn, Ratner revealed that he's currently working on remaking the 1982 sexy comedy The Last American Virgin, which is actually a remake of an Israeli film. More below! Though the film was overshadowed by another popular teen romp in the form of Fast Times at Ridgmont High, Erik Davis at Movies.com says, "If you want to know what it was like to be a teenager in the early 1980s,...

A Good Old Fashioned Orgy
It was one thing when Hollywood released two "friends with benefits"-themed movies this year a few months apart: No Strings Attached and Friends with Benefits.
But a mainstream movie about an outright orgy? A Good Old Fashioned Orgy, which opened last weekend, seems like something new, right? Could it be that Americans, and American movies, are growing up? They're we're finally getting, um, religion on the topic of sex in film?
Of course, the problem with movie trend articles is that there are so many movies released every year that you can always find examples to support almost any point you want to make. I mean, when it comes to sex, Cruising (1980), Basic Instinct (1992), and Showgirls (1995) weren't exactly chopped liver.
Cruising's infamous gay S&M club
And let's face it: the mere inclusion of sex and sexual topics in movies doesn't necessarily mean the...

We normally don't post endings to movies too often because who really wants the ending to a movie spoiled for them if they haven't watched it yet? We're making an exception with the ending to this movie, though, because a) it came out all the way back in 1982, and b) because it's the greatest ending to a movie ever. Why is it the greatest ending? Well, primarily because it's honest. So many films -- and especially films within this particular teen sex comedy genre -- come with a happy ending. Either the main character winds up with the love of their life, or they find redemption in some way, shape or form. Things just come full circle, and the hero gets what they want. The end. And then there's The Last American Virgin. This early '80s...
