James Cameron got his start in the film industry doing visual-effects work for low-budget sci-fi movies like “Galaxy of Terror” and “Battle Beyond the Stars,” but it didn’t take long for his wizardry to land him behind the camera. Within just a few films, Cameron put his stamp on the whole industry, crafting oft-imitated sci-fi hits on reasonable budgets before throwing huge loads of money into epic and sometimes troubled productions which, fortunately for everyone, pretty much always found an appreciative audience.
Watching Cameron’s films, from his original low-budget short to his trilogy of underwater documentaries, is a trip through his lifelong passions. You can see seeds of future blockbusters in early schlock like “Piranha II: The Spawning,” and you don’t even have to look that hard.

Happy #RobertEnglundDay!
About one third of the 150+ acting credits accumulated over the course of Robert Englund’s 50-year career fall under the horror genre. Screambox is streaming five of them, along with the all-new documentary, Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story.
Here are six Robert Englund movies you can watch on Screambox now…
Galaxy of Terror
Before moving to Elm Street, Englund went to space for 1981’s Galaxy of Terror, the first of two back-to-back Alien knock-offs produced by Roger Corman. The film follows a ragtag spaceship crew on a rescue mission to a barren planet, where they encounter a deadly creature. In a slight twist on Ridley Scott’s sci-fi/horror classic, Galaxy of Terror uses its victims’ own fears against them — which, incidentally, is similar to Freddy’s modus operandi.

Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story picks up with a 12-year-old Robert being sent to theatre camp getting attention from girls and being complimented by talk show host Steve Allen. That, especially the female attention, pointed him toward his career. And really, what better motivation can a young man have?
Best known for playing Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, Robert Englund already had a long history in the genre. dating back to Tobe Hooper’s Eaten Alive in 1976. Who could forget his entrance announcing “My name’s Buck, and I’m here to fuck!” and the criminally underrated Dead and Buried in 1981 as well as Galaxy of Terror and a host of others. And it’s continued well past his time as Freddy, most recently doing voice acting in the bizarre puppet film Abruptio.

As the beginning of his IMDb bio states, “Every horror film buff will recognize the name Jacques Haitkin.” Haitkin was the cinematographer on one of the most popular horror movies ever made, the 1984 Wes Craven classic A Nightmare on Elm Street (watch it Here). And while Craven didn’t return to the helm for A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge, Haitkin did return to be the cinematographer on that sequel. Sadly, we have to share the news today that Jacques Haitkin is no longer with us. This news was broken on the Facebook account of filmmaker Tony Randel, who is best known for directing Hellbound: Hellraiser II and worked with Haitkin on Galaxy of Terror, Ticks, Fist of the North Star, Rattled, One Good Turn, and Assignment Berlin.
Randel posted, “I knew Jacques Haitkin practically my entire career. We met on a Roger Corman horror/sci-fi epic – Galaxy of Terror.

The 1977 film about former hippies suffering from homicidal acid flashbacks will be getting a 4K release at an undisclosed future date, and the image quality is noticeably better than on my DVD. But, what about the actual film? Glad you asked…
Blue Sunshine begins at a party where one of the guests is doing an impersonation of Rodan. “The artist?” asks one of the guests. “No, the monster” But a real monster is about to show up as Frannie loses his wig and his mind and begins shoving guests into the fireplace.

Hearthstone‘s new Throne of the Tides mini-set isn’t quite the game-changer that the Ccg’s full expansions usually are, but it still features enough new cards to shake up the competitive meta and open up some new deckbuilding possibilities.
As is usually the case with these mini-sets, Throne of the Tides certainly makes some of the game’s best decks just a little better than before. However, it’s clear that this expansion’s new cards will also help rescue a few deck archetypes that have struggled to really break into the game in a big way in recent weeks. How much it will end up shaking up the ranked play scene remains to be seen.

A strange trend is taking place on British television: Opinionated American-style television channels have appeared for the very first time.
Both generally right-leaning in agenda, if you watch Gb News on any given night, you’ll see regular features about so-called “cancel culture” and “wokeism,” as well as a show hosted by the former populist Ukip leader Nigel Farage. Watch “Piers Morgan Uncensored” on TalkTV on any given night and you’ll see rather surreal opening titles consisting of a brain farting out the words “snowflake society,” followed by Fox News-style swooping sound effects and a monologue where Morgan tries to “cancel the cancel culture.”
So why is it all so strange? Well, despite heavy publicity, these shows and channels don’t appear to be resonating with U.K. audiences. “Piers Morgan Uncensored” has consistently shed viewers, from 317,000 overnight viewers on launch day, to less than 60,000 just over two weeks later.

Happy Friday, everyone! This time last week, we celebrated the amazing independent horror films that were released throughout the 1970s, so it only makes sense that we shift our focus today to all the great indie genre movies and moviemakers that helped make the ’80s one of the most unforgettable decades in horror.
Much like the 1970s, we saw a handful of eventual Masters of Horror establish themselves as genre storytellers on the indie side of things throughout the ’80s. On the East Coast, we saw an explosion of creativity come out of New York City with filmmakers such as William Lustig, Frank Henenlotter, Larry Fessenden, and Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman making their feature debuts in the world of horror during the ’80s. And even though Troma Entertainment was founded in 1974, the company really came into its own during the 1980s as well. The indie studio founded by the aforementioned...

Hello, everyone! As we get ready to head into December, we have one last round of home media releases for this month on tap first. If you haven’t had a chance to check out James Wan’s Malignant yet, Warner Bros. is releasing it on both Blu-ray and DVD, and A24 is finally bringing Saint Maud home this Tuesday, too. Both Summer of 84 and Ticks are getting the 4K treatment, and Severin Films is showing some love to Ruggero Deodato’s Raiders of Atlantis as well.
Other titles being released on November 30th include Wild Indian and The Last Matinee.

“You can go to Africa and watch elephants and you’ll see more or less what you see on TV but you can’t go anywhere in the world and see plants like you can in this series…The whole experience in 3D is just entrancing, and hypnotically beautiful,” Attenborough said of the original 3D film.
“Kingdom of Plants” allows Oculus TV audiences to see the natural world in plant time and at plant scale via 8K 3D 60fps time-lapse footage shot over weeks on customised 3D stereoscopic cameras, specially developed stereo-timelapse rigs, and VFX compositing...

While plenty of sci-fi movies have predicted a future dominated by virtual reality, the technology isn’t quite that widespread — yet. Exclusive: Discovery’s long-running motoring format Fifth Gear is to relaunch as an Electronic Vehicle (Ev) show and has installed former Top Gear host Rory Reid to present.

The original Fifth Gear ran for 28 seasons, first on Channel 5 and then Discovery channels History and Quest, before ending two years ago.

Apple TV’s ambitious sci-fi epic Foundation, premiering this Thursday, brings Isaac Asimov’s seminal trilogy to screen almost 70 years after the first novel was published.
The 10-episode first season centers on Dr. Hari Seldon (played by Jared Harris) and his efforts to preserve the future of civilization after predicting the fall of the Galactic Empire. David S. Goyer, who created the show and serves as showrunner, worked to ensure that the visually stunning series — which spans an entire millennium — didn’t feel like another Star Wars, which itself drew inspiration from Asimov’s books.

One of the biggest conundrums for many working in the fledgling Xr sector is how to make money in the medium.
As part this week’s Cannes Xr program, Jingshu Chen, co-founder of VR entertainment platform VeeR will deliver a keynote that seeks to address the issue.
Beijing-based VeeR distributes, produces and invests in narrative VR content, and also operates the ZeroSpace VR cinema chain in China.
Chen’s July 9 keynote, titled “Cinematic VR content distribution and monetization,” comes at a time when the hype around the medium has well and truly popped.
Reflecting on the growing pains of VR, Chen refers to Gartner’s famed “Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies.” Deals such Facebook’s 2014 acquisition of Oculus led to a “peak of inflated expectations,” which gave way to a “trough of disillusionment” from 2017 amid sluggish headset sales, tech issues, a lack of content and many VR companies retreating from the sector.

Mythic Quest Season 2 tested Poppy and Ian’s friendship, but the pair still make quite a team.
And when the Apple TV+ workplace comedy’s sophomore season came to a close on Friday, fans saw the two creative directors set aside their egos — for the most part — for the greater good. First, they let David know they were going to finally complete the new game expansion and unite Hera and Zeus. There was just one problem: Ian had to concede that Anthony had been right all along and Hera was in fact too big for Mythic Quest’s servers.

After a dark, melancholic season, the finale ended on a lighter and happier note.
Of course, after those final moments of Grey's Anatomy Season 17 Episode 17, we'd have to exclude Amelia and Link from that equation. The healthiest relationship remaining on the series, ended with the two on totally different pages.
Man, it sucks.
It was another hour where they sped through the timeline, catching us up to current times. It was a necessary evil, but hopefully, it'll be the last of that for a while. The time jumps and haziness of being a year behind made things confusing throughout the season.
Maggie and Winston's wedding was a timeline marker for us, but even considering that we probably could've done without the pointless twist of their parents objecting to the wedding.
It seemed silly and nonsensical that after Maggie flew them into town, and they spent weeks quarantining for their quiet event in the yard,...

I didn’t get it. When Ron Howard’s The Da Vinci Code took the world by storm in 2006, I was far from being a professional critic, but I could still be highly critical of something like this. It was an adaptation of the biggest literary phenomenon of the decade not starring Harry Potter, and it was arriving in cinemas with the kind of media frenzy usually reserved for Star Wars. All the while, its rollout suggested it had aspirations to be an awards contender. How could something that high-handed live up to that kind of hype?
As a splashy Hollywood version of Dan Brown’s most popular potboiler, The Da Vinci Code premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May and was the subject of countless faux-examinations about early Christianity on the cable news circuit—as well as the object of ire for some modern Christians’ growing need for perpetual outrage.

The Wag portfolio includes “What on Earth?” and “Strange Evidence” for Science Channel, “Weird Earth” for The Weather Channel, “Combat Dealers” for Quest and “War Factories” for UKTV.

December 2020 marks 30 years since the release of Home Alone – three decades since Moira from Schitt’s Creek and the crooked cop from The Sopranos forget to take Roman from Succession’s brother to France, so he set fire to Tommy from Goodfellas. If that news has you spiralling into a pit of what-have-i-done-with-my-life despair, you’ll be in need of some distraction.
Here’s a bit of that, with a list of the new additions to Disney + UK this December. On Christmas Day, there’s Pixar’s Soul to look forward to, but before that is the free-to-subscribers debut of the live-action Mulan, plus the ongoing weekly episodes of The Mandalorian and Marvel’s Agents of Shield season seven.
We’ll keep this list updated as more announcements are confirmed.

The Hearthstone team has revealed the game’s upcoming Madness at the Darkmoon Faire expansion, and everything we’ve heard so far suggests it could be the game’s most meaningful expansion yet.
The upcoming expansion will also feature the usual number of new cards (135). Among the new cards are the return of the “Old Gods” Legendaries who each produce some potentially game-changing effects when played. There’s also a new keyword called “Corrupt” which basically allows you to upgrade a corrupted card by playing a card that costs more than it does. Interestingly, Blizzard has announced that they will supplement that set by releasing 35 card mini-expansions between the release of Darkmoon Faire and the debut of Hearthstone‘s next full set sometime in 2021.
