It's evening time in the fictional suburb of Los Angeles, CA: Selby Flats, CA and the next days "Morning News" has come out with the following headline: ROBERTS GIRL HELD FOR MURDER; DAUGHTER OF META WHITE ROBERTS HELD ON SUSPICION OF MURDER In scene one, at the Bauers, Papa and Bert are concerned about Kathy. And Bert is bending Papa's ear about how Kathy is following same patterns as her step mom and Bert's sister-in-law, Meta. But Papa gets Bert to admit that she is also concerned about a renewed affair between Bill and Gloria La Rue. When Bill comes home he has bad news, he's been fired from his latest advertising job due to the headlines about Kathy. In scene two, at Joe Roberts' office at the "City Times", Meta agonizes over the predicament Kathy finds herself in, and wonders if perhaps Meta and Joe should not have been married. Joe reassures her that wouldn't be the case, but then Joe gets a phone call about how Kathy has been arrested for suspicion of murder of her former husband, Bob Lang. Meta and Joe also discuss how they will break the news to Kathy's brother, Joey, and what it will all mean to her marriage to Dr. Richard "Dick" Grant, Jr.

It's shortly before dinner time at the Bauers, and Bert is angry because her sister-in-law, Meta and her husband, Bill just had an argument with her about Kathy's predicament and told her that she was wrong. Papa tries to advise her daughter-in-law to overcome her jealous ways when it comes to the closeness between siblings Bill and Meta. Bert admits, to Papa, though that what she is really concerned about is Bill's possible re-involvement with Gloria La Rue, and that she thinks Bill maybe weak and not only with an affair with Gloria, but also possibly going back to the bottle. Bill, still not employed, comes back home after both seeing Meta home, and also after a hard day at work. With Bert in the kitchen, Papa advises Bill to perhaps show Bert a little patience and also a little more tenderness. But Bill admits to Papa he's not sure how faithful he can be to Bert with Bert's domineering ways interfering.

In the morning, a pregnant Kathy Roberts pays a visit to the office of Reverend Doctor Paul Keeler, drawn to The Friendship Lamp or the guiding light. Kathy had called Rev. Dr. Keeler to seek spiritual advice. But she admits to the reverend that what she really came for is that she feels maybe she should plead guilty in the murder of Bob Lang. Rev. Dr. Keeler gets Kathy to see that maybe she should not be a martyr with the baby on the way, and Kathy further admits that what is really troubling her is that the baby is not Dr. Dick Grant's (her current husband) but actually Bob Lang's. Rev. Dr. Keeler continues to advise Kathy that she really needs to let Dick take care of her and the child (and stay married to her) if that is what Dick wants. Kathy is not so sure, and admits she feels as if Dick is playing the dutiful husband out of a sense of misplaced duty. Later that evening, Kathy informs Dick that they should get a divorce due to the baby being Bob's. But Dick refused to grant Kathy her wish for a speedy divorce, even with Kathy's protest that he's staying married to her and going to take care of another man's baby only out of his sense of duty. Dick goes further and says it's because he loves her, but Kathy refuses to let him get close to her.

Johnny's father, Dr. Paul Fletcher shows up and Peggy remembers she had to get back to her duties. Johnny tells Paul, after Peggy leaves, that Peggy is the only girl for him which surprises Paul seeing how Johnny is only 18 years old. Paul then tells Johnny he misses him while he is living with his Aunt Jane and Uncle George. Johnny says he won't return home, because of his step mom, Robin's continuing resentment of him. Paul asks Johnny to be patient with Robin because of Robin's recent miscarriage, and tries to convince an unbelieving Johnny that Robin wants him back, as well. Johnny refuses to budge, and doesn't believe that Robin is over her resentment and tells Paul he plans to stay indefinitely with his aunt and uncle. Johnny goes back to his duties, with Paul left very worried. Later, at Ben Scott's restaurant office, his daughter Peggy pays him a surprise visit.
