Lots of menaces to choose from.

Warning: Spoilers
Fight the temptation to put real life meglomaniacs in place of the powerful millionaire the secret group chooses to kill and picks out the assassin from among them. Not an easy job for John Bowers in 1921, and as brave as people think they are, many could not actually go through with it, especially if they consimate their love the night before.

I may not have made the decisions that the writers did in creating this fascinating melodramatic thriller. The first twenty minutes are great comma especially as Bowers and his rival (Lon Chaney Sr.) face off over their love for the one female member of this gang (Leatrice Joy).

Chaney of course dominates the film with his dark character portrayal, seen standing in the rain crying inside over what's going on in the honeymoon bed of Bowers and the overly dramatic Joy. The visual of him getting soaked is unforgettable. But the plot really gets out of joint with a disappointing narrative. I wanted to love this one, but found that it really could have been so much better had the writers continued to be daring and ran with it.
