Passable (just about) rom-com guff... and Hugh Jackman's movie debut
12 January 2024
Hugh Jackman's movie debut was 1999's light Australian rom-com "Paperback Hero" (the third of writer / director Anthony J Bowman's four films) in which he's a ruff-tuff trucker from a small, hard-drinkin' Outback farming community - who's secretly written & sold a schmaltzy romance novel, putting local hot tomboy Claudia Karvan's name to it for marketing purposes. Will their flash Sydney publisher Angie Miliken find out? What'll Karvan's fiancée Andrew S Gilbert think? Will anyone really care, or not predict where it's heading? Nah... but it's passable enough guff (just about) for those in the mood for it - and it is interesting to watch the fresh-faced Jackman in action.
