Sri Asih is the second entry in the Bumilangit Cinematic Universe (BCU) after Gundala back in 2019.
Where do I start?
When it was announced that Indonesia's superheroes would have their own cinematic universe, I was excited because now there's a chance to introduce our local superheroes to the world. Especially Gundala, which I remember once reading its comic when I was in elementary school and watching the movie in the 80s.
Then Gundala, the 2019 movie, was released, and I felt disappointed after watching it. That movie was trying too hard to be dark and gritty, with a storyline that was too hard to follow and clunky CGI. Not to mention, it introduced so many characters that, unfortunately, I can't even remember them now. Sri Asih suffers the same fate as Gundala, trying to be dark and gritty but failing to tell a compelling story. One hour was spent setting up the background story that felt so boring that I found myself playing games on my phone. The second half was where the superhero thing began, and I quite liked it. The fighting scenes looked clearly choreographed with some cool special effects, but I'm okay with it. For some reason, I felt like watching a Wonder Woman movie because the fighting style was almost identical, especially when Sri Asih used her bangles to counter the bullets. The CGI was cool and almost perfect, with the exception of one scene around 1 hour and 27 minutes that looked fake. The acting was okay; no one stood out, but the actress who played Gisel is really terrible; her overacting was really painful to watch. Also, the way the Fire Goddess spoke wasn't intimidating but annoying instead.
Overall, I think there's a lot that needs to be improved in the way BCU produces its future movies. I haven't watched the third movie of BCU, which was Virgo & The Sparklings, or the recently released companion series Tira, so I can't judge whether the same problem repeats itself or if there's any improvement.
