Amsterdamned (1988)

An 80s Horror Gem!
21 November 2023
It all started with the brutal killing of a young hooker. She was killed, dragged into a canal, and then hung from a bridge. One of Amsterdam's best detectives, Eric Visser (Huub Stapel) is assigned to the case. He is assisted by Vermeer from the River Police. (Years ago, Eric stole Vermeer's wife, but when they also separated, Eric and Vermeer became friends again.)

Soon, more victims are found in the canals and Eric is convinced the killer is a diver who is familiar with the canals. His investigation leads him to diving clubs, where he meets Laura - a keen diver and museum guide. As predicted, she becomes the romantic interest, and I actually rather enjoyed the chemistry between them. Laura recently lost her husband, and is seeing psychiatrist Martin Ruysdael - an ex-diver - who occasionally takes Laura to dinner or the theater, although they are not a couple.

With most of the action taking place on the canals, this allows for beautiful cinematography with great aerial shots of Amsterdam. At least back in 1988, films were shot on location, so everything looks very realistic. The boat chase sequence was absolutely incredible!!

With action, suspense, some humour and a bit of gore in the mix, 'Amsterdamned' was a highly entertaining movie. This is an 80's horror gem that deserves to be seen. As an added bonus, Huub Stapel is oh-so-sexy!!
