Sure, religious horror themes aren't anything new, and certain movies (won't name names) just try to be grotesquely blasphemous, not to mention they bleed gratuitous gore from every limb of clergymen and nuns, just to get people talking and Conservatives mad. Deliver Us has gory and sexual scenes, but it avoids old tropes by how skillfully the writing delves into the mind of each character, exploring their belief in what God wants from them, but subverting that belief with questionable ethics. The cinematography captures so much beauty in the Estonian wilderness setting, making us, and the main character realize that the world is worth saving from the threat of the movie's final antagonist, revealed more clearly in an ending I could not have predicted.
