Feels a bit... rushed?
25 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Season 1 is ok, but it runs quick introducing a ton of bad guys in only a few episodes. Some of the plotlines feel a bit... contrived, and clark x lois is rushed so quickly it almost feels a bit like fanfiction at the end.

The show struggles to focus on the right bad guys, trying to turn its focus to shadowy organizations of "good guys" that are bad. It's weakened by the "good guys" being totally unwilling and unable to stop for even a second to confirm if something or someone is a threat before jumping knee high into half baked conclusions. The best villians are just that, the plain old supervillians the show introduces to keep action in each episode. Two of the worst "bad guys" are played as totally innocent good guys for the entirety of their episode which is hard to believe given the audiences knowledge that theyre supposed to be or turn evil.

Overall its not bad, but seems to struggle from the short season length and maybe some rushed writing. I want to like it given the high quality of the first episode or two, but I'd like to see some improvement with pacing in season 2.

Thoughts on the characters:

Clarks character is spot on, he is a boyscout as he should be, and when something isnt morally right he points it out. But they explore him grappling with his past in a sort of clumsy fashion. He has no idea about anything kryptonian, and he jumps to some pretty quick conclusions each time he gets a tiny bit of information. Sometimes its understandable but at some point he almost seems gullible.

Live wire is a great character only sabotaged by not getting enough focus as the plot dictates they move at a quick pace to introduce all the other villians.

Jimmey olsen is not a redhead anymore which is a bit of a meme at this point. They pull the "I already knew you were superman card" buuuut in this story clark is really bad at hiding his identity so its not unbelivable just a bit poorly written given the events of the episode its introduced in.

Lois is a great character, but the show really wants to make her contribute to clarks survival while he's superman-ing so there are a couple contrived moments. Lois in this continuity isnt recognized as a reporter which leads to her grappling with feelings of inadequacy. One episode really leans into this which ends up feeling a bit forced as the characters who make her feel inadequate are comically willing to kill superman on a moments notice.

Amanda Waller is also done well. She's bone headed, but Amanda has always been written that way.
