Hunt Club (2022)
1/10
Theme: Male toxicity.. it's so 2018. Lol

Warning: Spoilers
When I decided to watch this film I just looked at the actors and thought okay this can't be horrible. And maybe this film isn't horrible if you think of it in a satire/comedic sort of way.

It has all the regular ingredients for a recipe of male=evil. The first thing the men talk about while they are sitting around the campfire is toxic masculinity. Do guys really talk that way? No. I don't know a single friend who uses the words masculinity, especially while drinking and hanging out da homeboys.

From that point on everything was basically downhill/prescriptive, as you might suspect.

The director of this film must be from some distant galaxy. She has a lot to learn about basic human behavior and frankly, common sense. Guys just don't talk that way and when you use these buzz terms it makes people feel like you're back in 2018 pushing some kind of me-too message. Which by the way is so passe.

The bulk of this film is leading up to the women taking revenge on the unrealistic white male chauvinists cast. I thought it was kind of interesting that the male characters had to explain their background (a few of them worked at Wall Street?). It was just weird that the two guys who worked on Wall Street looked like characters out of Deliverance. I think the writer and director were trying to send a message that it's not just hillbilly males it's your everyday friendly neighborhood male that are toxic too.

The women of course are portrayed as ponds which I kind of feel like that in itself was quite disrespectful. At least give the first two women who were put out for the hunt a fighting chance. No they were as submissive and lamb-like as they could possibly make them I suppose to make the audience feel for them. Which brings me to character development. There is no character development. If you didn't know the actors you would be lost as to who is the person to root for and who is the person to just cringe on.

The script was absolutely awful. I really feel bad for the three actors in this film that had done some good work in the past. I'm referring to the girl from American Beauty, the guy from Starship Troopers, and Mickey Rourke. It's almost as if they were given the script, read the lines, but didn't even know what the film was about.

I guess if you want to take a trip back to 2018 and relive the me too movement, and hate on men, this film would be right up your alley. But if you want a more relaxing evening, like curl up next to your favorite toxic male companion and watch one of the pre 2010 films that will put a smile on your face and a few chuckles between the two of you, this would be my suggestion. Don't forget the popcorn!
