Review of The Silence

The Silence (1963)
6/10
Slow, Symbolic and Contemplative

This Felt Like a Fellini film as it follows characters through a brief period with no particular plot or conclusion to play out. It does dive deep into three key character's emotions, much of which will need to be decoded with reflection upon the visual symbolism. I read a meaty review which helped me notice the meaning of somethings I thought were inconsequential. The film follows a mother and son along with an aunt as they travel home by train but need to stop at an obscure foreign country as the aunt has become ill. While the aunt stays in bed, the mother wanders the town mixing it up with the gritty and promiscuous locals and the little boy wanders around the large hotel interacting with an older gent and several dwarfs. As a viewer you wait around wondering if the ill aunt will recover and continue their journey but the sisters unload some personal baggage and you notice the unique relationship between the boy and his mom and the boy and his aunt. The film had really nice cinematography, not much music and overall felt lethargic and the least compelling of the three films.
