As an antiwar film it is considerably better than director Lewis Milestone's previous foray into this worthy sub genre, "A Walk In The Sun", (although nowhere near as fine a critique of combat as his classic, "All Quiet On The Western Front"). For one thing, James Webb's screenplay does not spread like verbal crabgrass and choke off the action the way Robert Rossen's did in "Walk". And in general I preferred the acting in this film with Peck, Torn, Killer Blake and especially George Shibata turning in fine, low key performances as opposed to the general over the top-ness of the cast in the 1946 work. (On the downside, however, Harry Guardino and Norman Fell are strong candidates for the George Tobias Award given for best scenery chewing in a war film). B minus.
