Mad Heidi (2022)
1/10
A Disgraceful Display of Misused Public Funds
12 May 2023
To say that "Mad Heidi" was a disappointment is an understatement. It's a film that utterly fails to respect not only the conventions of good storytelling but also the hard-earned money of taxpayers. It's an egregious example of public funds misused, and every Swiss franc wasted on this production feels like a direct affront to the public.

The central issue is not merely that the movie is bad - many films are. What truly makes "Mad Heidi" an egregious disappointment is the fact that this film was financed with taxpayer money. It's one thing to produce a poor quality film with private investment; it's another entirely to misuse public funds for a project that clearly did not have the artistic merit or public interest to justify such an expenditure.

The plot is thin, the characters are one-dimensional, and the humour - if we can call it that - is often tasteless and puerile. The exploitation of Swiss stereotypes is not charming or funny as it was perhaps intended, but rather disrespectful and lazy. And what's worse, it's all done with the backing of our tax money.

The acting is equally lamentable. Despite having a cast that has shown promise in other productions, the performances in "Mad Heidi" are completely unconvincing. It is as if the actors were not fully committed to the project, perhaps sensing the impending disaster from the outset. And who could blame them? The script is a mess, filled with cliches, tropes, and dialogues that would make even the most forgiving viewer cringe.

The movie tries to disguise its lack of depth and creativity with gratuitous violence and crude humor, but these attempts fall flat. It's as if the creators of "Mad Heidi" were so focused on being controversial and outrageous that they forgot to include anything of substance.

One could perhaps overlook these flaws if the movie at least had some aesthetic appeal, but even here, "Mad Heidi" fails. The cinematography is amateurish at best, and the special effects are so poorly executed that they pull you out of the experience instead of immersing you in it.

I am not only disappointed as a viewer, but I am also outraged as a taxpayer. This film is an egregious misuse of public funds, an insult to the taxpayers who were unwittingly made to finance such a dismal project. Our tax money should be used for projects that benefit the public, not for financing self-indulgent film projects that serve no purpose other than to inflate the egos of their creators.

In summary, "Mad Heidi" is a poorly executed, unimaginative film that should never have seen the light of day, especially not with the use of public funds. It's a disappointing waste of resources, a missed opportunity, and a painful reminder that not all investments lead to beneficial outcomes. If there's a lesson to be learned here, it's that the allocation of public funds should be done with more scrutiny, and definitely not for ventures as ill-conceived as this one.
