Family matters
11 August 2022
Family in a broader sense that is. The characters in the movie have become a part of us. Maybe even more so if you know the novels/books the movies are based on. I lost count but I reckon this is movie number 8? Someone also told me the movies do not pick the right order when it comes to the releases of the books. I can't talk to that - and I imagine there is even more to the books that cannot be fully translated to the screen.

Talking about translating (and no pun intended), this being a German movie it still has quite a bit of dialect to it. Some things that some Germans may not even be able to decipher. If you are aware of the other movies though, you won't have any issues to follow - not just the language but also the story. Though to be honest, you don't even have to know the other movies to enjoy this one. It does of course make sense and you will have a better understanding of even smaller characters (most of whom we have seen in previous movies).

Playing the lottery is something that as they say in the beginning is giving almost no chance to get whatever is in the jackpot. And if you have seen the trailer you are aware that the lottery thing plays a big part to the story. Though what the trailer omits to tell you (thankfully) is a certain twist that really makes everything even ... worse or better, depending on your outlook. Hopefully you'll be able to see the comedy and go for better.

The last movie had a sad note to it (concerning an animal/pet) and this tries to remedy that and also adds a bit of a vegan flavor to it. But don't expect this to be woke now. Because the first chance it gets it really dives into a cliche ... but it is funny and you should not feel offended by it, no matter your stance on sexism (again, it is a joke and mild one at that I would argue, but some people may be more sensitive than others).

Having said all that, the movie is really well done, the comedy works and the title gives us another piece of .. cake in this instance. Combined with another word, which makes this something I have not heard before, as is true with the other titles. Also quite impossible to literally translate ... at least as a one word combo. No pun intended here by the way.

Acting is good, the teasing is amazing and the jokes work ... we are family! And as family we fight with each other from time to time, but we always have love for each other too. Even more so when this adds a Western element to it. Big sucker for that - and even more so when the cinematography is nodding to the old school westerns ... it may be a bit over the top (the ending and the ... let's call it confrontation), but if you are having fun, nothing can stop it ... not even wasting food in the process (no pun intended)
