Struggles With A Soggy Script
1 August 2022
Con artist Johnny Riggs (Fred Astaire) takes advantage of the naïve and newly-affluent Yolanda (Lucille Bremer) by pretending to be her guardian angel. But feelings get in the way.

So does the script, which is weak and uneven. What saves the film, to some extent, are the pageantry and production values. Director Vincente Minnelli does the best he can with the project by filling some scenes with celebration and action.

The song and dance numbers are good, but not up to the standards set by Mr. Astaire in his earlier films. Bremer's voice is dubbed. Her dancing is adequate for the steps in their joint numbers; she's a ginger, but she's no Ginger.
