Mary, Queen of Scots
10 June 2021
Follows the difficult life of the passionate, but naive Scottish queen, played by Vanessa Redgrave and her battles with religious fanaticism, her marriage to Lord Darnley and most particularly her dangerous clashes with Elizabeth I, played by Glenda Jackson as she believed herself to be the rightful queen of England.

Colourful, well acted historical biography that looks closely at Mary - who seems doomed from the start. Redgrave is solid enough in the lead role, but the film is best when Jackson is in it, including during their meetings, which famously didn't take place. A fine supporting cast helps - Trevor Howard, Patrick McGoohan and Nigel Davenport all make their mark , although Timothy Dalton is a bit colourful as Darnley.
