Review of Obsession

Obsession (IV) (2019)
3/10
An old John D. MacDonald/Travis McGee plot?
16 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The MO of this story -- a killing committed with a chain hoist and being solved with forensics -- is nearly identical to one used in an old Travis McGee series novel by John D. MacDonald: "Pale Gray for Guilt."

But then Obsession is a typical Double Indemnity-style, love-triangle murder movie. And not a particularly convincing one. Also, the twist at the end where an incidental first-act character turns out to be a co-conspirator is reminiscent of many other stories.

Obsession's femme fatale is so steamy that she gets by without much acting skill. In contrast, Kathleen Turner in Body Heat delivered both so well that she became a star overnight. For that matter, with Obsession set outside New Orleans, it's remarkable that director didn't take more advantage of the heat-humidity-sweat motif. And the detective's hat and mannerisms seem quite similar to those of the cop played by J.A. Preston in Body Heat.
