SYNOPSIS: A parallel love story going from past to present between the life of Mae (Issa Rae) and her mother Christina (Chanté Adams)

REVIEW: This film was very average to me. Initially I was very intrigued with the intertwining story from past to present, but as time went on I realized I wasn't getting very attached to either story due to split time on screen. The Director/Writer (Stella Meghie) just through two characters on screen, had them fall in love and added in some drama and expected us as the audience to grab onto it. There was definitely more time spent on the present love story between Mae and Michael (LaKeith Stanfield) and I actually wanted to see more of the past love story. I felt the past love story had something stronger going for it with the layers between Christina wanting to move and follow her aspirations, while Isaac (Y'lan Noel) wanted to stay. Then you had Christina's relationship with her mother that seemed tense and all of that culminated into an interesting premise. I know it sounds like I hated the film at this point, but these issues weren't outrageous. I still found myself enjoying the acting and the film as a whole. You have a couple of strong supporting performances from Rob Morgan and Lil Rel Howery. Then of course LaKeith is always giving a solid performance alongside his co-star, Issa Rae. Ultimately, this film is enjoyable enough, but not enough for me to say everyone should see it or even spend the time and money at a theater for it. It is worth a watch on a lone Wednesday night. 6/10.
