Not that bad, but a bit funny
21 September 2019
Up until a while ago, CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD (Carrot Top's only leading man movie) was in the Bottom 100. Its score on IMDB is an appalling 2,2 but why is not in the list anymore? Since July 2018 the new standards require 10,000 ratings for the movies to be included, and CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD has to this day 6,324 ratings, meaning that if it will ever make the list again it would be at #9 in the list. So why did I watch it? Well, I occasionally watch bad movies because some are unintentionally funny. So, it's CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD that bad as its rating and reviews might say? No. Now it's not a good movie, but still funny in spots.

When the movie begins we are introduced to Edison (Carrot Top), a slacker surfer and part-time inventor that lives in his home by the sea with his two surfer buddies. One day, unfortunately, the land lady comes by asking the rent and since Edison's inventions are not liked by anyone and he can't keep a job for more than 15 seconds, they are in big trouble. Thankfully one day Edison stumbles across Armand McMillan (Jack Warden), an old man and CEO that has the car repaired by Edison. In a bizarre plot twist, before Armand dies, he says in his recorded will that Edison is the new CEO of its company, leaving his nephew Bradford (Larry Miller) only his surfboard. Then, since Bradford wants to take over on the company, he has an evil plan. But Edison, helped by his buddies will save the company and just like in many other similar movies of the 1990s he'll get the girl of his dreams.

So it's the movie that bad? No. Carrot Top is funny in some moments and I also liked the various cameos by Warden, Glenn Shadix, Shaquille O'Neal after KAZAAM and STEEL, and Larry Miller played a great villain.

In some ways, the movie comes off with a blending of the live action FLINTSTONES movie (with Carrot Top that becomes the chief of a big company and the villain that tries to ruin him with an evil scheme) and THE JERK, as Carrot Top lives on a beach side and then he moves in the big town, and his naivety is mostly his best friend.

The bottom line is that the movie isn't great but funny and if you don't think too much, you might get a kick out of it. And trust me, there are much worse comedies that have always been in the Bottom 100 and deserve it: BABY GENIUSES (1 and 2), SON OF THE MASK, DISASTER MOVIE, GOING OVERBOARD, EPIC MOVIE, JACK & JILL, ED, LEONARD PART 6 and SANTA WITH MUSCLES!!!. Don't be afraid to buck conventional wisdom as I think this film is enjoyable and a decent one to watch with your friends who know and love 1990s comedies.
