Carmen Sandiego (2019–2021)
8/10
Fantastic Start

As a kid of the 90's, the original game show was something I watched religiously. Every episode I grumbled to myself that I could complete the tasks at the end that the kids always failed at. I could win myself the computer!!!

Alas I never was able to get on the show and prove myself. The most I could do was play the series of PC games. I never really watched much of the original cartoon, but I remember enjoying it.

Now twenty odd years later and 30 year old me is sitting down to watch a new Carmen Sandeigo series on Netflix.

This series is damn fantastic, even for someone who is probably too old to be watching it. It's main audience is kids as each episode starts with an educational fact list about the country/city they are visiting. It's a simple show most episodes, but that doesn't stop 30 year old me from enjoying it.

The stand out aspect of it is the animation and art style. It's sleek and stylish and really gives of some noir vibes. It just looks like you'd imagine a worldwide spy cartoon would look like.

It's a neat twist to have Carmen be the lead character, thus they needed her to be stealing from baddies, rather than stealing for her own gain. But it would probably be very dull if they followed a group of ACME kids again chasing her. They do a really great job making the character of Carmen and her back story. They make her an intricate and intriguing character to follow.

The Boston accented sidekicks I could do without, but they're not unbearably annoying. Also the French detective who joins ACME is kind of stupid and annoying, but his partner evens out his stupidity.

The villains and agents of VILE are really well done and at times are secondary characters. The twist at the end of the season was one I didn't see coming and hopefully adds a really good subplot for the 2nd season.

This show deserves to have more seasons so I hope Netflix allows it to. It's fantastic for kids and even adults can enjoy many aspects to it. I just wish this first season was longer!!!

*Season 2* The 2nd season was a continuation of the greatness. The Tokyo episode really hit me as a huge Lost In Translation fan. The Boston side characters are still the weakest part, but they haven't reached the unbearable levels, but they get close to the cusp in some parts. It was cool to finally get some more VILE agents as the same three were getting old. Setup for the 3rd season is interesting, hopefully it turns out to be a meaningful plot beat.
