The movie is a historical fiction based on real events. The main theme of the movie is grit of the protagonist supplemented by doses of nationalism where even grit does not help him.
There is no dull moment in the movie except for the filler commentary depicting events between 1936 and 1946, which runs for 5 minutes near the start of the movie.
However, nothing is so great to demand a second viewing. The movie is average to good throughout it's length, but never approaches greatness.
