Review of Lovesick

Lovesick (2014–2018)
5/10
It's not Richard Curtis...

...it's Richard Curtis and Ben Elton without the wit, charm, depth, dignity, pathos or humor!

(This assessment covers the first series only.)

Maybe the first time a comedy series has been centered around a venereal disease. It's a comedy for 'young adults' but I stuck with it anyway - Not sure why I did.

This 'situation comedy' tries a different take on traditional situation comedies... Instead of trying different stories in familiar settings (Fawlty Towers/Young Ones/Bless This House/On The Buses/et al) here we see the same tired old story played out in different places. One week it's a bowling alley, in another it's a wedding... or a party... you get the idea.

I got the feeling watching this that it probably started out as a screenplay for a movie and when that didn't work out it was expanded to fill a six-part TV series.

Unfortunately, the characters are too ridiculous and shallow and the stories are too far-fetched to draw in the viewer.

It does have some laughs, though, and in between the repetitive and annoying weekly ritual of wheeling out the same old characters to perform the same old lines, there is an occasional gag that works.

The real star of this vehicle is the amazing Joshua McGuire (Angus) the hapless and likable loser who steals every second of every scene that he shows up in.
