I was not going to comment on this but it has been eating away at me so I am releasing those feeling to comment.
I'm also sick of comments like "Oh but you are bi, how can you object?" My sexuality has nothing to do with this! This is a TV show about 2 Brothers and their exploits fighting with or against "supernatural" beings. Not my life story! If I want to fight for my rights I wouldn't turn to the writers of Supernatural! As good as it is, it is not the platform for such things. I tired of folk saying it is.
And then this episode happens! A supposed fan letter to the fans - supposed to be a celebration of 200 episodes. But it is only a shout out to some fans not ALL - so please can people stop saying this episode was a shout out to "ALL" the fans because it ISN'T! It is a shout out to those who "ship", it should not even be called "fan fiction" it should called just one groups idea of fan fiction because again all it alluded to was shipping/slash fiction.
They may be in the minority but there are people who write heterosexual fan fiction too - where was their shout out? There's also people who don't write their own stories at all, where was their nod? Not everybody who is a fan of Supernatural ships the male/male/angel characters.
If Dean had stuck to his outrage and continued to say "but this is wrong - we are brothers or but he's not even human" or the like, it may have kept some credibility but as he caved, it was a huge kick in the teeth to those of us who loathe the ship element. Especially as it can never be canon. Like it or not for good or bad, Dean and Sam were written heterosexual, that is a FACT!
It is a kick in teeth and insulting, to me and others, the writers are saying by all means have your own version but only as long as it's slash! Where was Sam and Dean with women if indeed subtext includes "sex" or is "hetero" sex so deplorable now anyone engaging in it should take up residence in a closet! OK I'm being flippant but it is ridiculously unrealistic to think everybody loves brother on brother or human on angel sexual interaction.
This episode left me cold and very angry. I understand why Mr Ackles is said to have complained, initially. I wished he'd have stuck with his gut reaction because he was right! Now the shippers will never believe that their "ship" will NEVER be canon - the writers didn't appease them they made it worse than ever.
So thank you Supernatural writers for ignoring a part of the Fandom - guess my money buying DVDs doesn't matter a jot. No I don't guess - with this episode you proved that you do NOT care about ALL of the fans, just those silly (and in my opinion, sick) shippers.
One final note Thank you for all but ignoring Crowley too! At least Mark Sheppard will know how us non shippers feel - EXCLUDED! Way to go Supernatural!
