Seems they really did not know what exactly they were filming here
31 December 2013
About the only good thing about this film is the fact that there were many attractive girls running around in their bathing suits. That is it, not even joking here. I caught this on MST3K, and watched as the movie went from a teen beach movie to a comedy caper here and there to the point one really did not get a sense of what was the main focus of the film. Was it the one dude from Arizona trying to find the one strange girl he meets on a boat, is it the people trying to pull off the scroll heist, was it the blond who seems hurt that the person she had no interest in has an interest in someone else or is it the blond guy show has a bevy of girls? The film is all over the place! I also think this is the first Warner Bros. movie I have seen spoofed by the gang of MST3K.

The story...um, there is sort of multiple stories here. None of them really are deep, just filler to get the the awesome teen singing and dance numbers. Or is the dance and singing numbers filler to get to the very fragile plots? All I know is a scroll is taken from a museum and some people on a yacht are trying to sell it or something. Meanwhile, a dude is introducing his friend from Arizona to the wild Catalina lifestyle and this friend is taken with a strange female. All this gets mixed together as occasionally people dance and stuff. The film seems like it was meant for more in a way, also. What I mean is that one could see more established stars in the roles, but they all turned them down so we get a ton of extras. The only person I recognized was Lyle Waggoner of Carol Burnett fame.

The gang of MST3K did a pretty good job riffing this film; however, it is more of a comedy film and comedy films are a bit more difficult to riff unless the film is totally chaotic and bombarded with stupid imagery like "The Wild World of Batwoman". So it made for an okay episode, but not one of their best. Horror, science fiction films and even action movies just riff better than do comedies.

The film basically was just a mash up of this and that. It did not seem to know what it wanted to be and thus it looked like a mess up on the screen. It seemed to want to be a beach movie though the most, so I will say that is what its best aspect came from. Which of course, is to say that the best thing about this film was the women in their bathing suits!
