7/10
Not as engaging as the book; not bad for all that.

Nearly forty years after its release, The Great Gatsby sets the stage for the epic mob movies that followed. Huge budget, authentic staging, and faithful period detail. What this movie lacks is pace and a central character to focus on. The switch after 25 minutes from Nick as protagonist to Jay Gatsby leaves Nick's character high and dry.

The surprising thing is that The Great Gatsby is much better than you might have heard, or than you might remember. It's quite faithful to the novel, too.

One peculiarity is that all the actors are obviously sweating buckets all the time. Was it the 1970's lighting? There's a distinct moist sheen to all of them which in the lack of compelling narrative is very distracting.
