He Was Once (1989)

This goes on too long..

Warning: Spoilers
This film concerns a young boy seeing a bear while he's out with his friends. However, when he tells his family about this, the father accuses him of lying and severely beats the kid. Later, the child learns that his father was the liar and everything is one big lie.

The idea of "He Was Once" isn't bad--make a spoof of the 1960s "Davy Goliath" using live actors dressed in odd clay-like costumes. I especially liked their wax-like hair and ears. Then, have the actors move about like stop-motion characters. The problem for me however is that this was a one-note joke--an idea that was novel but couldn't support a film any longer than about 3-4 minutes--and it lasted 16. Okay, they look like Davy and Goliath and reveal that instead of everything being good and Godly, it's all a sham. For a better and actually funny takeoff on Davy, try watching the very sick "Moral Oral" instead.

Overall, I appreciate the idea--I just didn't love the story.
