A movie about a boy's first love, but not really a kids movie.

My wife and I found this to be a totally interesting and entertaining little movie. It is about a 2 week period in June, just after school lets out, and the central character is Gabe (Josh Hutcherson). His parents are planning a divorce and Josh, only being just short of 11, is allowed to roam a 9 square block area near home, just west of Central Park, his 'Little Manhattan.'

Before this fateful 2-week period, Josh, like all the little boys at his school, stayed clear of the girls, because, even though no one knew what 'cooties' were, they were convinced that even touching one would give them to you. Josh's world changed forever when he signed up for karate classes and ended up being partnered with Rosemary (newcomer Charlie Ray, in a just right performance). Josh was mesmerized. As he and Rosemary found things to do together, first practice karate, then a jaunt to find dad an apartment, Josh developed a giant crush on Rosemary, but he didn't quite know how to handle it.

Bradley Whitford plays his dad Adam, and Cynthia Nixon his mom Leslie. This is a refreshingly nice movie, about a boy who experiences his first love. The first holding hands. The first little kiss. Things are sure to end, at least temporarily, when Rosemary goes off to summer camp in Maine. But Josh learns some things about life, and about himself, that he never knew before.
