Review of Code Unknown

Code Unknown (2000)
7/10
Well, I liked it, but it's not for all tastes....

After seeing Juliet Binoche in "Jet Lag," arguably one of the worst French films available commercially in the USA, it was refreshing to see give a great performance in this interesting, unusual film. I first became aware of this film from an article in "Cineaste." I must profess that I was so confused by the film that I decided to start it back from the start and watch it all over again. Upon second viewing, some things made more sense but this is definitely a surreal film, which is not surprising given that this director had helm-ed "The Piano Teacher" and the German film "Funny Games"- which is a sick and disturbing film if there ever was one. But, there is nothing sinister or revolting in this film. It makes statements about the world at large, including racism, immigration, poverty, and raising children in a mad, mad world. I think it is one of the few pre-Sept. 11th films which captures the world as it is right now! Most of the best scenes involve Binoche, including the ones in the supermarket and the swimming pool. I will probably watch the film for a third time, someday. It is a bit overwhelming, but ultimately it is a film that is worth the time. The same can not be said for "Funny Games," unless you have a thing for ultra-sadistic art films.
