Review of The General

The General (1926)
10/10
One of the greatest movies... ever
17 January 2002
Ladies and gentlemen,

I write this as a fan of comedy and history. Today, our senses are so innundated with fast action, loud sounds, and exciting displays, we forget to sit back at relax.

I find that "The General" is a great film. It may be hard for many of you to overcome it's shortcomings, being black and white instead of color, silent instead of full of sound and dialog, and a somewhat exaggerated acting style.

But that is the beauty of this era. This film is a masterpiece that can be enjoyed if you can let go of modern day views. The jokes are great. The action is exciting. The stunts are real, as was the danger while performing them. Some of the Civil War battle re-enactments were the most ambitious of it's time. It has romance, drama, comedy, excitement. It is a well balanced movie, far beyond most that are made today.

So, I encourage you. Take the time. Leave the shackles of the 21st century behind, and revisit our history in a way only history itself can do. You'll be happy you did.

Sincerely, A Fan of Great Cinema
