"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" is often criticized for its culturally problematic portrayal of the Thugee cult, and its unsettlingly dark content that, along with "Gremlins," led to the Motion Picture Association's creation of the PG-13 rating. The former issue is wholly legitimate, but is anything in the 1984 sequel more violent than Nazis getting their faces melted or Pat Roach getting cut to ribbons by a airplane propeller in "Raiders of the Lost Ark?"
What's not up for debate is that "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" was a particularly rough shoot for star Harrison Ford. The actor herniated a disc in his back while performing a somersault during the assassination attempt in Indy's bedroom, and refused to leave the set for treatment. As George Lucas recalled in John Baxter's "Mythmaker: The Life and Work of George Lucas," "[Ford] could barely stand up, yet he was...

This article contains details from real life events that will likely spoil upcoming episodes of HBO’s White House Plumbers.
Having learned most of what I know about the Watergate scandal from Mad magazine, it took me a while to realize White House Plumbers is a satire. The five-part HBO series telling the true story of the secret unit inside President Richard M. Nixon’s White House begins with The New York Times, not necessarily renowned for its comedic prowess. The story got the paper labeled as scions of “liberal media,” another term seemingly rendered spoof by the stringent journalistic standards of the periodical. The White House Plumbers pulled out their tools to stop the leaking of the Pentagon Papers, and hit a water main. It appears predestined they would get clogged at a place called the Watergate.
The limited series begins with a disclaimer warning none of the names...

An ill-advised tour of the snow-bound Overlook Hotel, as seen in Stanley Kubrick's 1980 horror classic "The Shining," can find menace in several of its nooks and crannies. The grim history of the hotel would leave supernatural traces behind –- Scatman Crothers' chef and telepath Dick Hallorann would liken the old hotel's malevolent presence to the scent of burnt toast –- in bloody elevators and time-warped ballrooms. However, one of the most intimidating places on the hotel grounds is a time-honored obstacle for fictional heroes: a towering labyrinthian maze, complete with its own axe-swinging monster.
Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) emerges as the Overlook's greatest weapon, prompting him to attack his family and chase his terrified child Danny (Danny Lloyd) into a nearby snow-flecked hedge maze in the film's climax (read more about the ending from /Film's Max Evry). An early scene in the film gives dimension to the maze without spoilers:

By the time Stanley Kubrick came to direct "Full Metal Jacket" in the mid-1980s, his legendary status had been well and truly established. At that point, most of his filmography was behind him. "Full Metal Jacket," released in 1987, would be his penultimate film, followed by "Eyes Wide Shut" in 1999 — the same year the director passed away. But Kubrick had long since ascended to a status in Hollywood that few other directors ever had or would reach. Naturally, actors were eager to be a part of his Vietnam War epic.
Kubrick, ever the informed and calculating artist, was well-aware of his reputation and took a characteristically unique approach to casting "Full Metal Jacket" by playing on that reputation. The director had always put the story first on whatever project he was working on, and as such was diligent about getting the right actors for his roles. As "Full Metal Jacket...

After Stanley Kubrick died, his widow Christiane reflected on a lesson her late husband never quite seemed to learn. As she told the BFI, "He would start the longest and most difficult jobs with this optimism and say, 'Oh, it won't take long.' He never learned the lesson that it does." Kubrick's movies were, themselves, very often the "longest and most difficult jobs" and 1987's "Full Metal Jacket" remains one of the best examples.
As Kubrick's daughter, Anya, offered in that same interview, "The point was to get things right. So if he felt someone was in error, he would make his point." Often making that point would take the form of demanding an inhuman amount of takes on his movies, most famously 60, and in one case 127 takes, of scenes in "The Shining". Seven years after the 1980 adaptation of the Stephen King novel, Kubrick's follow-up, "Full Metal Jacket," would...

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions.
After the highs of Amityville 2: The Possession, it’s hard not to see Amityville 3-D as something of a letdown. The Richard Fleischer-directed film lacks the visual flare that Damiano Damiani brought and the result is a film that is lacking all of the energy and verve of the first sequel. The new film feels more leaden and by the numbers, even as the film works overtime to justify its 3-D gimmick, which was all the rage in early 80s horror.
One stand-out aspect of the third Amityville is that it’s unafraid of being mean. The women, in particular, are treated horribly; the film’s two cruelest – and most memorable – deaths are reserved for supporting cast members Candy Clark (!) and Lori Loughlin (!!).

A few months after Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" — his first-ever blockbuster — hit theaters in June of 1975, the legendary filmmaker swore off the idea of returning to helm the followup. In John Baxter's "Steven Spielberg: The Unauthorised Biography") Spielberg is quoted as saying, Mmaking a sequel to anything is just a cheap carny trick." He has, of course, softened his stance on this issue over the years, having since called the shots on multiple "Indiana Jones" movies and 1997's "The Lost World: Jurassic Park." Despite his dismissive attitude, Spielberg gave serious thought to making an "E.T." sequel, enough so that he and "E.T." writer...
